Aluminium soakers are a straightforward solution for weatherproofing the junction between a roof slope and an adjoining wall. Where lead flashing can be slow to dress and awkward to work with, aluminium soakers slot in quickly and do the job reliably. They sit beneath the roof tiles at each course, channelling water away from the wall and preventing ingress at one of the most common points of failure on any pitched roof.
These are the kind of component that gets overlooked until there is a leak, at which point everyone suddenly becomes an expert on flashings. Getting them right first time saves a lot of awkward conversations with the customer later.
Where Aluminium Soakers Fit In
Aluminium soakers are most commonly used when a new roof butts up against an existing brick or masonry wall, such as a lean-to, side extension, or outbuilding. They are fitted one per tile course and used in conjunction with a cover flashing above, which is let into the mortar joint. The cover flashing does not need to be dressed as tightly because the soakers handle the primary weathering work below it.
Aluminium is a good choice here because it is lightweight, easy to cut on site, and does not require the skilled dressing that lead demands. It also handles thermal movement without cracking, which matters on exposed roofs where temperatures shift significantly between seasons.
These aluminium soakers are supplied in bundles of 25 and come in a wide range of sizes to suit different tile gauges and roof pitches. Selecting the right size comes down to your tile gauge and the upstand height required against the wall. If you are working on a standard concrete interlocking tile roof, the 300mm length options cover most situations. Steeper pitches or natural slates will often need the longer 325mm or 350mm versions.
Pro Tip: Always add 25mm to your tile gauge when calculating soaker length, and ensure the upstand sits a minimum of 75mm above the tile surface to give adequate cover flashing overlap.
