The steel cement board screw is a specialist fixing, and it matters that you use the right one. Standard drywall screws won’t cut it here — cement board is dense, abrasive, and often installed in areas that see moisture. These 4.2 x 32mm self-drilling screws are built specifically for that job, driving cleanly through fibre cement board and threading into light gauge steel framing without needing a pilot hole. The self-drilling point does the work, and the self-tapping thread locks it in.

The head geometry is worth noting. Ribs underneath the head act as their own countersink, pulling the screw flush as it drives home. On a cement board surface, that matters — a proud screw head creates a weak point and makes finishing harder. These sit flat without fuss.

Why the Coating on a Steel Cement Board Screw Makes a Difference

Cement board gets used in wet rooms, shower enclosures, external wall build-ups, and anywhere a standard plasterboard wouldn’t survive. The fasteners have to keep up. The organic plating on these screws is tested to 1,500 hours in a salt spray chamber — that’s a serious figure, and well above what a standard zinc-plated screw offers. In a bathroom or external application, a corroding screw head is exactly the kind of thing that causes callbacks six months after the job is done.

The A1 fire classification is relevant too if you’re working on projects with fire performance requirements. Not every fixing carries that rating, so it’s worth having on file if you’re asked.

Frame Thickness

These are rated for steel framing up to 3.0mm thick. That covers the vast majority of light section steel dry-lining work. If you’re going into heavier structural steel, you’d be looking at a different fixing entirely — but for partition and dry-lining frames, this is the correct tool for the job. Simple as that.

Sold in boxes of 200, which is a sensible quantity for any run of cement board fixing. Enough to get a job done without ordering again halfway through.

Pro Tip: When driving into cement board, use a variable speed drill at a controlled pace rather than full power — too fast and the drill point can skate across the hard surface before it bites, which chews up the screw head before you've even started.
