These stubby HSS ground drill bits are made from M2 alloyed High Speed Steel and fully ground from solid material — not rolled, not tipped. Ground from solid means tighter tolerances, a cleaner cut, and a longer working life than you’ll get from cheaper alternatives. If you’re working in confined spaces or need a bit that won’t wander on entry, the short flute length of a stubby drill makes a genuine difference.

Available in sizes from 3.2mm through to 5.1mm, these bits cover a useful range of common fixing and pilot hole diameters. The selection includes the kind of sizes that often get overlooked by standard sets — 4.1mm, 4.9mm, 5.1mm — which is handy when you’re drilling for a specific screw gauge or matching a clearance hole to a standard metric bolt. Manufactured to DIN 1897, so dimensions are consistent across the box. That matters more than people realise when you’re drilling repetitive holes on a jig or production line.

Where Stubby HSS Ground Drill Bits Work Best

The reduced length is the whole point. Standard jobber bits flex under lateral load, especially at smaller diameters. A stubby ground bit is noticeably stiffer, which translates to less drift and better hole accuracy. That’s why these are used in engineering workshops, fabrication shops, and by anyone drilling in a fixed machine setup where bit deflection causes problems downstream.

M2 Tool Steel Grade

M2 is the standard workhorse grade for HSS tooling. It handles heat well, holds an edge under sustained use, and performs consistently into mild steel, aluminium, copper, brass, plastics, and timber. Not exotic, just reliable — which is what you want from a drill bit that’s going to see regular use. Sold in boxes of ten, so you’ve always got spares when one gets blunted or snapped by someone in the crew who shall remain nameless.

Pro Tip: When drilling into steel with stubby bits, run at a slightly lower RPM than you would with a longer jobber bit and keep consistent downward pressure — the reduced length means less give, so the bit bites cleanly without needing high speed to compensate.
