The black carcass screw is one of those products that does its job without any fuss. Used in their millions across joinery shops and on site, these screws are the standard choice for assembling cabinet carcasses, fitting drawer boxes, building storage units, and any internal timber joinery where a clean, consistent fix is needed. The black phosphate coating gives a neat, low-profile finish and offers decent resistance to light surface corrosion during handling and in dry indoor environments.
Available in 4.0 x 32mm and 4.0 x 45mm, these two sizes cover the most common carcass assembly tasks — 32mm for lighter panel materials and thinner substrates, 45mm where you need a bit more bite through thicker sections or when fixing into solid timber rails. Both sizes arrive in a box of 500, which is about right for anyone doing regular workshop or site joinery rather than a one-off shelving job.
Where the Black Carcass Screw Earns Its Keep
Fitted kitchens, bedroom furniture, retail shelving, office joinery and workshop-built cabinetry are the obvious home for these. They work well in MDF, chipboard, plywood and softwood — the materials that make up the bulk of carcass construction. The coarse thread provides solid pull-through resistance in sheet materials, and the countersunk head sits flush without needing a recess when driven with care.
Driving Recommendations
These are twin-thread countersunk screws designed to be power-driven. A PZ2 bit is the correct driver here — use a decent bit, not a worn-out one that has already stripped three other screws today. Pilot drilling is not always necessary in softer materials, but in MDF edges or near board edges, a small pilot hole will save you splitting the material and wasting a panel.
At 500 screws a box and priced to suit regular trade use, this is the kind of product worth keeping a couple of boxes of in the van or workshop at all times. Running out mid-kitchen fit is not a good look.
Pro Tip: When fixing into MDF edges, always pilot drill first as the material is much denser along the edge grain and will split without warning, especially near corners.
