BondIt Bitubond is a self-adhesive bitumen flashing tape designed for general roofing repairs, flashings and water sealing work. If you need a reliable flashing tape that goes on quickly without specialist tools or hard-to-source primers on every job, this is the kind of product worth keeping a roll of in the van. The lead-coloured facing gives it a clean, finished appearance that sits well alongside traditional leadwork or on its own.
The bitumen backing gives genuine flexibility without the slump you can get from softer compounds in warm weather. It conforms to awkward shapes and uneven surfaces without creasing or lifting at the edges, which matters when you are working around chimney stacks, extractor vents or roof lights where flat tape simply will not sit properly. The facing itself is tough enough to resist puncturing under normal site conditions.
Where Bitubond Flashing Tape Gets Used
This tape works across flat and pitched roofs, parapets, chimney stacks, roof valleys, RSJs, flues, concrete columns and around glazing. It bonds to masonry, metal, timber, asphalt, glass and asbestos sheeting. The wide range of widths, from 50mm right up to 600mm, means you can match the tape to the job rather than making do with whatever is nearest to hand.
Cold Weather Application
Below 5°C, adhesion drops off noticeably. Store the roll somewhere warm for 48 hours before use in cold conditions, and gently warm the tape during application if needed. Surface preparation still matters: clean, dry and dust-free before you start, with a bitumen primer on porous or rough surfaces for the best long-term bond.
Available in 10m lengths across eight widths to suit everything from narrow pipe sealing to full parapet cappings.
Pro Tip: On porous masonry like older brick or rough concrete, always apply a bitumen primer first and let it tack off before laying the tape, skipping this step is the most common reason flashing tape lifts at the edges within a season.
Bitubond flashing tape is used across roofing and general waterproofing repairs on both flat and pitched roofs. Common applications include replacing or patching lead flashings around chimney stacks, sealing parapets and coping, waterproofing roof ridges and valleys, and sealing around roof lights, flues and extractor vents. It is equally useful for sealing downpipes, guttering joints and glazing rebates where a flexible, weather-resistant seal is needed.
Used by roofers, builders and maintenance contractors on masonry, metal, timber, glass and asbestos substrates. The self-adhesive format makes it practical for one-person application on site without additional fixing tools or specialist equipment.

Key Properties
Self-adhesive peel and stick application
Lead-grey coloured facing
Crease resistant and flexible
Puncture resistant facing
No slump in warm conditions
10m roll length
Widths from 50mm to 600mm
Not suitable for: Not suitable for application in temperatures below 5°C or onto wet, frosted or dusty surfaces. Not a structural repair product and should not be used to bridge significant gaps or cracks without proper substrate preparation.
Clean the surface thoroughly before applying, removing any loose material, moss or lichen. Porous or rough surfaces should be primed with a bitumen primer and left to dry fully before the tape goes down. In cold weather, bring the roll inside for 48 hours prior to use and gently warm the tape strip during application to maintain adhesion.
Peel back the release liner gradually as you lay the tape, pressing firmly with a roller or gloved hand to work out any air pockets and ensure full contact, particularly at edges and corners. On external angles and shaped surfaces, cut and overlap rather than stretching the tape, which can cause lifting later.
Remove all loose material, dirt, moss and lichen from the surface using a wire brush or fungicidal wash as appropriate
Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding
Apply bitumen primer to porous or rough surfaces and leave to become touch dry
In cold conditions, store the roll above 10°C for 48 hours and warm the tape gently during application
Cut the tape to the required length before removing the release liner
Peel back the release liner gradually and position the tape carefully before pressing down
Press firmly along the full length using a seam roller or gloved hand, paying attention to edges and overlaps
At angles or shaped sections, cut and lap the tape rather than stretching it across the profile
Do I need a primer before applying Bitubond flashing tape?
On smooth, non-porous surfaces like metal or glass, the tape will generally adhere without primer. On porous or rough surfaces such as brick, mortar or concrete, applying a bitumen primer first is strongly recommended. It significantly improves long-term adhesion and reduces the risk of edges lifting over time.
Can Bitubond flashing tape be used in wet conditions?
No. The surface must be clean, dry and dust-free before application. Moisture under the tape prevents the bitumen from bonding correctly. Do not apply in rain or onto frost-affected surfaces, and avoid application when temperatures are below 5°C.
Which width should I choose for chimney flashing?
For step flashings on the sides of a chimney stack, 150mm or 225mm tends to be the most practical choice. For the back gutter or apron flashing across a wider span, 300mm or 450mm gives you enough coverage to lap correctly onto both the roof surface and the masonry without excessive trimming.
Bitubond flashing tape consists of a reinforced bitumen compound laminated to a lead-effect aluminium facing. The bitumen layer provides adhesion and flexibility across a wide temperature range without cold-weather brittleness or warm-weather slump. The facing resists puncturing under normal foot traffic and general site conditions. No volatile solvents are involved in application, and the product conforms to general requirements for self-adhesive bituminous flashing membranes used in roofing and waterproofing repair applications.
