Annular ring shank stainless steel nails are the go-to fixing where a standard smooth shank nail simply will not hold. The rings cut into the timber fibres as the nail is driven, creating mechanical resistance that makes the nail very difficult to withdraw. Where timber swells and contracts with moisture, or where loads will test the joint over time, this type of nail earns its place. These are manufactured in A2 austenitic stainless steel, making them genuinely suited to external and coastal environments where a plain bright nail would rust and stain within a season or two.
Available in a range of sizes from 25mm x 1.80 up to 100mm x 4.50, there is a size here for most structural and cladding applications. The 1kg bag format is practical for site use: enough to get a job done without lugging around a full box, and easy to price into a quote. Each size is sold separately, so you can order exactly what the job requires.
Where Stainless Steel Nails Like These Are Used
These nails are widely used in timber frame construction, external cladding, decking, fencing, and any application where the fixing will be exposed to the weather long-term. A2 stainless steel is the standard specification for service class 3 environments under Eurocode 5, which covers timber exposed to weather or high humidity. If you are working to a structural timber specification or a building control requirement, these nails will meet that standard without needing to source a special product.
The ring shank design is particularly effective in softer timbers such as treated softwood decking boards and cladding battens, where a smooth nail can work loose over years of movement. For hardwoods and dense engineered timbers, pre-drilling is often worth doing at the thicker sizes to avoid splitting and to keep the nail driving straight.
A2 Stainless Steel for External Work
A2 austenitic stainless steel offers reliable corrosion resistance for the vast majority of external timber applications in the UK. It will not react with tanalised or pressure-treated timber in the way that ordinary bright steel or galvanised fixings sometimes can, which helps avoid staining on visible surfaces like cladding or fascia boards. For highly aggressive coastal or marine environments, A4 grade stainless steel would be the more cautious choice, but for standard external work these nails are a well-specified and cost-effective option.
Pro Tip: When nailing treated softwood cladding, use the smallest diameter ring shank nail that gives adequate holding power for the board thickness, as thinner shanks split the timber less and the ring profile will compensate for the reduced shank size.
