Aluminium annular ring clout nails in a 1kg bag. The ringed shank gives extra withdrawal resistance compared to a plain clout nail, making them the right choice for roofing work where tiles and sheet materials need to stay put.

Aluminium annular ring nails are the go-to fixing for roofing applications where a standard smooth-shank clout nail simply won’t hold well enough. The annular ring shank — a series of sharp ridges machined around the nail body — bites into the substrate as the nail is driven and resists being pulled back out. That extra withdrawal resistance is what makes them the preferred choice for fixing roof tiles, roofing felt, and sheet materials where wind uplift and long-term movement are a genuine concern.
Aluminium is used rather than steel for good reason. In a roofing environment, galvanic corrosion between a steel nail and an aluminium or fibre cement tile can cause premature failure and staining. Aluminium nails sit quietly in that environment without reacting, which keeps the fixing sound and the tile clean over the long term. They’re also light to handle in quantity, which you notice by the end of a long day on the roof.
Where Aluminium Annular Ring Clout Nails Are Used
These nails are used across the full range of pitched roofing work. Fixing plain and interlocking concrete or clay roof tiles, securing roofing felt and underlay, and fastening fibre cement slates are all standard applications. They’re also used for fixing corrugated bitumen and plastic sheet roofing panels where the annular ring helps cope with the slight movement these materials experience in temperature changes.
Choosing the Right Size
Size selection depends on the material thickness and the fixing depth needed. As a general rule, the nail should penetrate the batten by at least 25mm after passing through the tile or sheet being fixed. Finer shank diameters such as 2.65mm are suited to lighter materials where splitting is a risk, while the 3.35mm shank handles heavier fixing duties. This range covers sizes from 20mm up to 85mm, so there’s a suitable option whether you’re fixing lightweight underlay or securing thicker fibre cement products.
Supplied in a 1kg bag, these annular ring nails are a practical trade buy. The 1kg format is useful for smaller jobs or for topping up stock, and the 10-bag box option is available for larger roofing projects where running out halfway up a roof is not an option — and nobody wants that conversation with the client.
Pro Tip: When fixing roof tiles in exposed locations, always check the tile manufacturer's specification for nail diameter and length before ordering, as some tiles have pre-punched holes sized for a specific shank diameter that a 3.35mm nail won't pass through cleanly.
