White plasterers drywall scrim tape is one of those things that lives permanently in the bottom of a plasterer’s bucket — and for good reason. Applied along plasterboard joints before finishing, it bridges the seam between boards and gives the skim coat something to key into properly. Skip it and you will see that hairline crack reappear within a season. Use it correctly and the joint stays put.
This is a self-adhesive fibreglass mesh tape, which means it sticks directly to the board surface without any need for a bonding compound underneath. Press it into position, smooth it down, and you are ready to skim straight over the top. The open weave mesh allows the finishing plaster to work through the tape rather than just sitting on top of it, which is what makes it hold long term.
Where White Drywall Scrim Tape Gets Used
The most common application is along butt joints and tapered joints on standard plasterboard. It works just as well on moisture-resistant board, fire board, and most other drywall sheet products. Internal corners benefit from scrim too, particularly on dot-and-dab installations where slight board movement is common.
Choosing the Right Width
The 48mm width suits tapered-edge joints and tight internal angles. The 75mm is a good all-rounder for flat joints and is what most plasterers reach for first. The 100mm wide tape is useful on butt joints where there is no recess, giving a bit more coverage either side of the seam before skimming. Having the right width on site saves faffing about with overlapping narrower tape.
Available in single rolls or bulk boxes, so whether you are topping up supplies or stocking up for a full first-fix fit-out, you can buy what actually makes sense. At this price, buying a box rather than individual rolls is a straightforward decision. White finish makes positioning easy to check before the plaster goes on.
Pro Tip: On butt joints with no taper, apply a thin base coat of finishing plaster first, let it firm slightly, then bed the scrim tape into it before applying your full skim coat — this stops the tape lifting at the edges and gives a much tighter finish.
