Practical points worth knowing

Chalk lines work best on dry, relatively clean surfaces. Dusty concrete or damp timber will give you a fainter mark, so a quick brush or wipe before snapping helps. Blue chalk shows up well on most surfaces and brushes off easily when you are done. Red chalk is more permanent and better suited to outdoor work or situations where the mark needs to survive foot traffic and weather.

The hook at the end of the line can catch on a nail, screw or the edge of a sheet. If you are working alone, a small offcut with a nail through it makes a decent anchor point. With two people, one holds the hook while the other pulls and snaps.

This is a tool that does one thing well. It will not replace a laser level for precision work over long distances, but for everyday setting out and marking, it handles the job quickly and reliably.
