Mickey pin masonry nails are one of those things every sparky and first-fix installer ends up keeping a box of on site. Small, hard, and driven straight into brick or block, they let you fix steel channelling, plastic conduit, and cable trays without reaching for a drill and wall plug. That alone saves a fair bit of time when you’re running a long run of trunking across a bare block wall.

The 2.5mm diameter shank is sized specifically for the kind of light-duty channel and tray fixing that would be overkill with a full masonry bolt but too demanding for a standard pin. They seat flush and hold well in mortar joints and medium-density block alike. The hardened steel means they don’t bend on the way in if you’re using a club hammer and punch, which is the typical method on site.

Where Mickey Pin Masonry Nails Get Used

These come into their own on electrical first fix, particularly when running surface cable management across internal blockwork or brick. Conduit saddles, mini-trunking clips, and steel channel supports all tend to get pinned this way. Plumbers and heating engineers use them for the same reason when clipping pipe runs to walls without wanting to make a production of it.

The box of 200 is a sensible quantity for a trade job. You’ll use more than you expect once you’re in the rhythm of fixing, and running out halfway through a long trunking run is the kind of thing that costs more in time than the nails ever would in money. Two sizes available, 25mm and 30mm, so you can match the fixing depth to the material you’re going through.

Driving Mickey Pins Correctly

A steel punch or purpose-made nail gun insert keeps the shank true and stops the head from skipping off. Freehand hammering directly onto the nail head is a recipe for bent shanks and bruised knuckles. Not ideal. Take the extra ten seconds and use a punch.

Pro Tip: Use a steel punch rather than hitting the nail head directly, it keeps the shank aligned and stops it folding over in harder block, especially on second attempts when the surface is already slightly damaged.
