Converts an SDS drill to accept standard keyless or keyed chuck fittings. A simple, low-cost way to use regular drill bits in an SDS machine without switching tools.

Credit Plans Available

An SDS chuck adaptor fits into the SDS-Plus socket of a rotary hammer drill and converts it to accept a standard drill chuck. This lets you use ordinary round-shank drill bits, countersinks, and other accessories in a machine that would otherwise only take SDS-shank tooling. If you are on site with one drill and a mix of bit types, a sds chuck adapter is one of those small items that earns its place in the bag.

SDS drills are built for hammer-drilling into masonry, and their quick-release chuck is designed specifically for SDS-shank bits. The problem is that standard twist bits, HSS bits, and similar accessories do not fit that chuck directly. Swapping to a conventional drill for every non-masonry hole adds time and means carrying an extra tool. The adaptor solves that neatly by giving the SDS drill a standard 10mm or 13mm chuck fitting, depending on the adaptor type, so you can use the drill in rotary-only mode for wood, metal, or plastics without needing a second machine.

Where an SDS Chuck Adaptor Gets Used

The adaptor is most useful when you are already using an SDS drill for the bulk of the work, say drilling fixings into a block wall, and you need to occasionally bore through timber noggins, drill pilot holes in metal brackets, or run a countersink bit. Rather than unpacking a second drill, you slip the adaptor in, switch the drill to rotary mode, and carry on. It is also handy when space is tight and carrying multiple tools is not practical.

The key point is that when the adaptor is fitted and used in rotary mode, the SDS drill performs like a conventional drill. It will not deliver the same balance and feel as a purpose-built combi drill, but for occasional non-hammer tasks it does the job. Just remember to disengage the hammer function before use, or you will be putting unnecessary stress through the adaptor and the chuck.

Compatibility and Fit

This adaptor is designed for SDS-Plus (also written SDS+) drill chucks, which is the standard format found on the vast majority of rotary hammer drills from brands including Bosch, Makita, DeWalt, Hilti, and Milwaukee. It is not intended for SDS-Max tools, which use a larger, heavier shank format built for breakers and large rotary hammers. Always confirm your drill takes SDS-Plus before ordering.

The sds chuck adapter is a straightforward, no-fuss accessory at a price point where it makes sense to keep a spare in the van. At under two pounds, the question is not really whether it is worth buying, it is more a case of wondering why you did not already have one.

Pro Tip: Always switch your SDS drill to rotary-only mode before using an SDS chuck adaptor, as running the hammer function with a standard chuck fitted will damage both the adaptor and the chuck over time.
