Bluebird Screw Ties are stainless steel wall starter ties designed for tying a new leaf of brickwork, blockwork or stonework to an existing single skin wall. BBA approved and made from stainless steel, these screw ties are a reliable choice for both internal and external leaf construction where a wall starter system is needed without the faff of a full channel-based solution.
The screw tie method has been around long enough to prove itself on site. Rather than fixing a channel and threading ties through it, you drill directly into the existing brickwork, insert the plug, and drive the screw tie in. The tail then bends flat to sit in the bed joint of the new leaf. It is straightforward, saves time, and gives a solid mechanical fix into sound masonry.
Where Bluebird Screw Ties Are Used
These ties are most commonly used when building an extension against an existing house wall, or when adding an internal partition leaf against a solid external wall. They are used in new build and refurbishment work wherever a new masonry leaf needs tying into an existing structure. The tie is suitable for brick, block or stone coursework on the new leaf side, and fixes into existing brick or block on the host wall side.
The stainless steel construction means these ties will not corrode in exposed or damp conditions, which matters on external leaves and in cavity wall applications where moisture movement is expected over the life of the building. Zinc-plated alternatives exist, but for anything exposed to weather or long-term damp, stainless steel is the sensible specification.
BBA Approval
Bluebird Screw Ties carry BBA (British Board of Agrément) approval, which means the product has been independently assessed and certified for the application it is sold for. For projects where Building Control sign-off is required, this approval removes any question about whether the tie is fit for purpose. Some inspectors will specifically ask for BBA-approved ties, so it is worth knowing this product qualifies.
Bluebird Screw Ties are available here individually or in boxes of 100. If you are tying up a full extension or a run of blockwork, a box of 100 is the practical buy. A single tie is useful if you need a sample, a replacement, or you are only tying a short section of wall.
Installation follows a consistent pattern: drill into the existing brick at an angle, alternating one up and one down every third brick course or every block course. This staggered approach distributes the load across the wall and prevents a line of weak points forming at a single horizontal plane. Once the tie is driven home, it bends flat into the bed joint of the new leaf and the brickwork continues over the top. No special tools, no complicated components.
Pro Tip: Always stagger the ties alternately up and down as you drill into the existing wall, not in a straight horizontal line, as this spreads the load and avoids creating a plane of weakness in the host masonry.
