Yellow gas-grade PTFE tape, 12mm wide and 5m long. Used to seal threaded gas pipe fittings to prevent leaks. A staple for gas engineers and plumbers working on domestic and commercial gas installations.

Gas PTFE tape is one of those things you simply cannot do without on a gas job. This is the yellow-coded, gas-grade version — not the white plumbing tape — and that distinction matters. Gas fittings require a tape that meets the specific demands of gas pipework, and using standard white PTFE on a gas installation is not acceptable practice. At 12mm wide and 5m long, each roll gives you enough to work through a solid run of fittings without constantly reaching for a new one.

PTFE tape works by filling the microscopic gaps between male and female threaded fittings. When wrapped correctly, it forms a compressed, non-hardening seal that prevents gas from tracking along the thread. It also acts as a thread lubricant, which makes it easier to achieve a full turn on tighter fittings without overtightening or damaging threads.

Where Gas PTFE Tape Gets Used

This tape is used wherever threaded connections appear in gas pipework — meter connections, gas cock fittings, appliance connections, and compression fittings with threaded adaptors. It is suitable for natural gas and LPG installations, making it useful across domestic boiler work, cooker connections, and commercial gas pipework alike. Gas engineers will get through these regularly on a typical day’s work, which is why buying in bulk from a trade supplier makes obvious sense.

Yellow Means Gas Grade

The yellow colour coding is there for a reason. It identifies the tape as gas-rated to both the installer and any inspector who checks the work later. White PTFE tape is thinner and not rated for gas service. If you are ever in any doubt about which one to grab from the van, yellow is gas, white is water. Simple enough to remember, important enough not to mix up.

Each roll is compact and easy to carry, so most gas engineers keep several in their toolkit at any one time. At this price, there is no reason not to stock up properly.

Pro Tip: Always wrap the tape in the direction of the thread — clockwise on a right-handed thread — so it tightens onto the fitting rather than unwrapping as you make up the joint.
