Select the pin length based on the material thickness. As a general rule, around two-thirds of the pin should penetrate the substrate behind the trim piece. Drive the pin to just shy of flush using a hammer, then use a nail punch to set the head slightly below the surface without bruising the surrounding timber.
Fill the punch mark with a suitable wood filler or stopper, allow to dry, and sand back before painting or finishing. On hardwoods or dense MDF, a pilot hole with a fine drill bit will make driving easier and reduce the chance of the pin bending under impact.
