The masonry washered nail is one of those fixings that earns its place in every site bag. Whether you are pinning a timber batten to a brick wall, fixing a door frame into a blockwork reveal, or securing cladding grounds to a concrete substrate, this is the nail that does it cleanly and reliably. The washer head spreads the load across the surface of the timber, which helps prevent the nail pulling through under tension or movement. Simple idea, works well.
These nails are hardened to withstand being driven into masonry without bending or deforming. Anyone who has tried to hammer a standard wire nail into a mortar joint knows how that ends. Masonry nails are a different animal entirely — the steel is treated to handle the impact and resistance that comes with driving into hard substrates. The washered variant adds that extra bearing surface, which makes them particularly useful anywhere the timber is under load or where the fixing needs to resist pull-through.
Where the Masonry Washered Nail Gets Used
In terms of practical application, these are most commonly used by first and second fix carpenters, general builders, and groundworkers. Fixing sole plates to concrete floors, strapping studwork to masonry walls, nailing window board bearers — these are the everyday jobs where a washered masonry nail does exactly what is needed without requiring plugs, rawlbolts or any additional fixings. Less faff, faster job.
Size and Box Options
Sizes run from 25 x 3.70mm up to 75 x 3.70mm, with a 37 x 3.5mm option also available, covering everything from shallow battening work through to deeper structural fixing into thicker masonry. Boxes come in 50 or 100 depending on the size, which makes them easy to buy in useful quantities rather than a bag that rattles around and loses half its contents on the van floor. At £1.75 a box, stocking up makes straightforward sense.
Pro Tip: For cleaner driving into dense engineering brick or hard concrete, mark your fixing position with a sharp masonry punch first to stop the nail tip wandering before it bites.
