Galvanised clout nails are the standard fixing choice for roofing felt, slates, shingles and similar sheet or tile materials. The wide, flat head spreads the load across a larger area, which stops the fixing from pulling through the material under wind pressure or general movement. These come in a 2.5kg TIMbag and are available in four lengths: 30mm, 40mm, 50mm and 65mm, all at a shank diameter of 2.65mm.

The hot-dip galvanised coating gives medium-duty rust protection, which is what you need when nails are going into exposed or damp conditions. They conform to Eurocode 5 and service class 2, so they meet the structural and durability requirements for timber connections in covered, occasionally wet environments. That covers most roofing applications where the nail is concealed under felt or tile but still exposed to condensation and moisture over time.

Where Galvanised Clout Nails Get Used

On site, these are most commonly used by roofers laying underlay or felt before tiling. The large head keeps the felt pinned flat without tearing around the fixing point, particularly useful when you are working quickly across a large roof before battens go down. The same principle applies when fixing shingles or thin timber slates where a standard round-head nail head would pull through under load.

The 30mm and 40mm lengths suit roofing underlay and lighter applications. The 50mm and 65mm versions are used where you need a bit more penetration into the substrate, such as fixing through thicker material or into older timber where the surface may have degraded slightly. The 2.65mm shank is substantial enough to hold without splitting thinner timber.

Buying in a 2.5kg Bag

A 2.5kg bag is a practical trade quantity. It is enough to cover a decent-sized job without carrying excessive weight up a ladder, and the TIMbag format keeps the nails together and easy to decant into a nail pouch or belt bag. If you are pricing a job, a 2.5kg bag of clout nails goes a long way on a standard felt and batten roof, so buying per bag rather than per box keeps your material costs in check.

These galvanised clout nails are a straightforward, well-specified fixing that does exactly what is asked of it on a roofing job. Nothing more complicated than that.

Pro Tip: When fixing roofing felt in windy conditions, double up your clout nail fixings along the eaves and verge edges before battening down, as these edges take the most uplift and felt tears are almost always from the perimeter inward.
