An intumescent pipe collar is one of those products that sits quietly in the wall doing nothing — until it absolutely has to. Fitted around plastic soil, waste or drainage pipes where they pass through fire-resistant structures, the collar’s job is to respond when everything else is going wrong. In a fire, plastic pipe burns through and disappears, leaving a hole in your fire-rated wall or floor. The intumescent core in this collar reacts to that heat by rapidly expanding inward, crushing the collapsing pipe and sealing off the opening. Fire integrity maintained. Job done.

These collars are designed for retro-fit, so you are not restricted to new builds. The stainless steel outer casing wraps around the pipe and locks in place using a tab-closing device with welded lugs — no special tools, just a straightforward fix. They can be face-fixed directly to a wall or ceiling structure, which is a useful option when you cannot access both sides of the partition. That said, built-in installation is equally supported.

Where Intumescent Pipe Collars Are Used

These collars are suitable for use on concrete, masonry and plasterboard partitions, making them appropriate across a wide range of building types from new housing to commercial refurbishments. The intumescent material itself is resistant to water, non-flaking and difficult to tear, so it holds up in the kind of damp plant-room or service-riser environments where these pipes typically run.

Available in four sizes — 55mm, 82mm, 110mm and 160mm — they cover the standard above-ground soil and waste pipe diameters you will encounter in residential and commercial builds. The 4-hour fire rating applies in both vertical and horizontal applications, which keeps things simple when you are dealing with fire compartmentation requirements across mixed orientations.

This is a fire-stopping product, not an optional upgrade. Building regulations require fire-rated penetration sealing wherever services breach compartment walls or floors, and an intumescent pipe collar is the accepted method for plastic pipe penetrations. Backed by a 10-year guarantee.

Pro Tip: When face-fixing to plasterboard partitions, make sure you are fixing into the board and not relying on it alone for load — use the manufacturer's fixing guidance and ensure the collar sits flush so the intumescent material can expand freely without obstruction from the surrounding finish.
