Rotary impact masonry drill bits are the bread and butter of any tradesperson who drills into hard materials day in, day out. Whether you’re fixing into brick, block, dense concrete or natural stone, you need a bit that can take sustained hammer action without folding, wandering or blunting after five holes. This range covers the most popular sizes in both diameter and length, so whether you’re sinking a short 3mm pilot or a 25mm bore through a cavity wall, there’s something here that does the job properly.
The carbide tip is what matters with masonry bits. Tungsten carbide inserts are brazed into the steel body to handle the percussive forces that rotary impact drilling generates. The flute geometry channels dust and debris up and out of the hole, which matters more than people think. A choked flute slows the bit, builds heat, and can cause the tip to work loose over time. These bits are designed to clear waste efficiently, which keeps penetration rates consistent and extends working life.
Where Rotary Impact Masonry Drill Bits Come Into Their Own
The range spans diameters from 3mm all the way to 25mm, with lengths from 75mm up to 400mm. That spread is deliberate. Smaller diameters in shorter lengths suit cable and conduit work, fitting back boxes, or installing plugs and fixings in wall tiles and brickwork. Mid-range sizes, say 8mm to 12mm at 150mm to 200mm, are the workhorses for general fixing, frame anchors and masonry bolt installations. The longer shanks, 300mm and 400mm, are used when you need to get through cavity walls cleanly, or when you’re core-drilling a path for large pipework and need the bit to travel straight over a longer distance without wandering.
Matching Length to the Job
It’s easy to default to whatever bit is closest on the van, but length selection genuinely affects the result. A bit that’s too short for the depth required means you’re drilling in stages, repositioning, and risking an angled bore. Too long, and you lose rigidity, especially on the wider diameters. Pick the shortest bit that comfortably reaches the required depth with a little clearance for dust accumulation at the tip. You’ll get a cleaner hole and the bit will last longer for it.
These are sold individually, which makes sense when you need a specific size to replace a worn bit or fill a gap in the kit without buying a full set. At this price point, keeping a spare of each common size in the bag is just sensible site practice.
Pro Tip: When drilling deep holes with a long masonry bit, withdraw the bit every 30 to 40mm and clear the flutes, especially in dense concrete where dust packs quickly and causes the bit to overheat and lose its edge far sooner than it should.
