A zinc plated steel tee plate for strengthening and repairing T joints in timber. Countersunk holes for a flush finish. 76 x 76 x 16 x 16mm. Sold in a pack of 2.
A tee plate is one of those bits of builders metalwork that looks almost too simple to matter, until you need one. This zinc plated steel tee plate is 76 x 76mm with 16 x 16mm arms, designed for reinforcing T joints in timber where two pieces of wood meet at right angles. Woodworkers, joiners and general builders have been reaching for tee plates like this for years, and with good reason — they work.
The countersunk holes let screw heads sit flush with the plate surface, so there’s no proud metal catching on anything once the job is done. That’s particularly useful on skirting board repairs, door lining joints, timber frame connections and any other situation where a clean, flat finish matters. Nobody wants a screw head snagging a decorator’s brush or a finger in a cupboard.
Where the Tee Plate Earns Its Keep
These are used across all sorts of jobs: repairing weakened joints in timber furniture, strengthening stud partition frames, bracing gate structures, and fixing up garden shed frames that have seen better days. The zinc plating gives a decent level of corrosion resistance for internal use and occasional light external use in sheltered locations, though they’re not intended for prolonged wet exposure.
At under a pound for two plates, they’re the kind of thing worth keeping a handful of in the van or the workshop. Structural they are not — this is reinforcement and repair territory, not primary fixing. But for what they do, they do it reliably.
The 76 x 76mm size is the most common general-purpose dimension for this type of plate, suited to standard softwood timber sections used in stud work, shelving and joinery repair. Fixing screws are not included, but standard countersunk wood screws in 3.5mm or 4mm will sit cleanly in the holes.
Pro Tip: When fixing a tee plate to a weakened joint, pre-drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the timber, particularly in older or drier wood where the grain can be unpredictable.
Tee plates are used wherever a T joint in timber needs strengthening or pulling back together. Common applications include repairing loose joints in timber door frames and linings, reinforcing stud partition connections, bracing timber shelving, and patching up lightweight garden structures such as shed frames and gate bracing. Joiners and general builders typically keep a stock of these for small repair jobs that would otherwise need a more involved fix.
Best For
- T joint reinforcement in timber
- Door frame and lining repairs
- Stud partition bracing
- Shelving and furniture repair
- Shed and gate frame repairs
Compatible With
- Softwood and hardwood timber
- Standard countersunk wood screws
- 3.5mm and 4mm fixing screws
Key Specifications
- Dimensions: 76 x 76 x 16 x 16mm
- Material: Zinc plated steel
- Countersunk fixing holes
- Pack of 2
Not suitable for: Not suitable for structural load-bearing connections or prolonged outdoor exposure in wet conditions. These plates are intended for joint reinforcement and repair rather than primary structural fixing.
Hold the tee plate over the joint, lining up the centre of the plate with the intersection of the two timber sections. Mark through the fixing holes with a pencil, then remove the plate and pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting. Reposition the plate and fix with appropriate countersunk wood screws, tightening evenly so the plate sits flat and flush against the timber surface.
- Position the tee plate centrally over the T joint, aligning each arm along its respective timber section
- Mark the fixing hole positions onto the timber through the countersunk holes
- Pre-drill pilot holes at each marked position using a bit slightly smaller than your screw diameter
- Reposition the plate and drive countersunk wood screws through each hole, tightening until the screw heads sit flush with the plate surface
- Check the joint is pulled tight and the plate lies flat before completing the fix
What size screws should I use with this tee plate?
Standard countersunk wood screws in 3.5mm or 4mm diameter will sit cleanly in the countersunk holes. Length will depend on your timber thickness, but 25mm to 35mm is typical for most repair and reinforcement jobs.
Can these tee plates be used outdoors?
The zinc plating offers light corrosion resistance, so they're fine for sheltered external locations such as inside a shed or under a covered gate frame. Prolonged direct exposure to rain is not ideal — for fully exposed outdoor use, a hot dip galvanised or stainless plate would be more appropriate.
Is a pack of 2 enough for a typical repair job?
For a single T joint repair, one plate is usually sufficient, so a pack of 2 gives you a spare or covers a second joint. For larger jobs such as a full stud wall or multiple frame repairs, you can order multiple packs.
Manufactured from steel with a zinc plated finish to provide basic corrosion resistance and a clean appearance. The countersunk hole profile is designed to accept standard countersunk wood screws, allowing the fixing heads to sit flush with the plate face. At 76 x 76 x 16 x 16mm, this is a general-purpose size suited to standard timber sections used in joinery, partition framing and furniture construction.
