If you’ve run out of hardener mid-job, or you’ve picked up a tin of Metolux 2-part wood filler only to find the hardener tube has dried out, this is exactly what you need. The Metolux Hardener is the activating component for Metolux two-part wood fillers, and without it the filler simply won’t cure. Each tube is 40g, and they come in a pack of two, which is sensible given how often the hardener runs out before the filler does.

Two-part wood fillers are the go-to choice when you’re dealing with serious defects — deep rot pockets, structural voids, damaged window frames, door edges that have given up entirely. The filler itself is durable and workable, but it’s the hardener that drives the chemical reaction and gives you a repair you can actually sand, plane, and paint without it crumbling away six months later. Getting the ratio right matters, and having a fresh tube of Metolux Hardener on hand means you’re not guessing with a dried-up old squeeze.

Using Metolux Hardener with Your 2-Part Filler

The process is straightforward. You squeeze out the filler, add a measured amount of hardener — usually a small ribbon relative to the filler volume, following the guidance on your filler tin — and mix thoroughly on a board or piece of card until you get a consistent colour with no streaks. From there you’ve got a limited working window before it starts to go off, so it’s not the moment to answer the phone.

The 40g size is well matched to a standard Metolux filler tin for most job volumes. A pack of two tubes gives you a bit of insurance, especially on longer jobs where you might be filling in stages. Stored correctly in a cool, dry place, the hardener has a reasonable shelf life, but like most two-part chemistry it won’t last forever once the tube is opened. Use what you need and recap it firmly.

Pro Tip: Squeeze a thin consistent ribbon of hardener onto your mixing board rather than blobs, as it disperses evenly into the filler much faster and reduces the chance of unmixed streaks weakening the repair.
