A 25mm PZ3 impact driver bit sounds like a simple thing. And it is, until it snaps mid-drive on a cold morning with forty screws left to go. These Pozi No.3 impact bits are built around updated metallurgy that takes the punishment of modern high-torque impact drivers far better than standard bits. The metal composition has been specifically developed to handle demanding impact driving applications, with the kind of break resistance that actually holds up across a full day’s use.

The torsion zone is the key feature here. Rather than a uniform hardness throughout the shaft, the bit body is deliberately less hard than the tip. That sounds counterintuitive, but it works. When an impact driver delivers its rotational and downward force, a fully hardened bit has nowhere to go but sideways, which means a snap. The torsion zone absorbs and distributes that load, flexing slightly instead of fracturing. It’s the same principle behind why good spanners are drop-forged rather than cast, they give a fraction rather than breaking clean.

Where These PZ3 Impact Bits Earn Their Keep

For anyone fitting decking, cladding, timber frames, or running fixings into joists and noggins, PZ3 is the size you reach for most. It’s the bit that drives the bulk of structural timber screws, coach head fixings, and heavier gauge decking screws. A 25mm length keeps the driver head close to the work, which helps with control and reduces the wobble you get from longer bits in tight spaces.

The black phosphate finish does more than look the part. It gives a meaningful level of corrosion resistance, so leaving a bit clipped to your belt on a damp day won’t turn it into something resembling a rusty nail by Friday. It also reduces friction slightly during driving, which helps in hardwood where resistance is high.

Heat Treatment and Longevity

The heat treatment process used on these bits is aimed at longevity as much as raw hardness. A bit that is too hard will be brittle. One that is too soft rounds off quickly. Getting that balance right is what separates bits that last a week from bits that last a month of real site use. These are produced with that balance in mind, giving consistent performance across the pack rather than one good bit and nine mediocre ones.

Pack of 10 at a sensible trade price. Stock a few packs and you’ll stop running short at the wrong moment.

Pro Tip: When driving large timber screws with a PZ3 bit, keep your impact driver set to a mid-torque setting for the first few threads and let the torsion zone do its job rather than hammering straight in at full power, it extends bit life noticeably.
