£5.42£6.50 EX VATINC VAT
Plastic spiral dowels for fixing light elements into polystyrene or mineral fibre insulation. Ideal for mounting cameras, lamps, door numbers and similar fittings. 6mm hex socket drive. Recommended with a 5.0 x 40mm woodscrew.
Fixing anything into insulation board is one of those jobs that looks straightforward until you use the wrong fixing and watch it spin uselessly in a hole that now needs filling. These 85mm plastic spiral dowels from Ziel-Plast are designed specifically for anchoring light elements into polystyrene or mineral fibre wool, giving you a reliable grip in materials that standard fixings simply cannot bite into.
The spiral profile displaces the insulation material as the dowel is driven in, creating mechanical engagement without crushing or splitting the surrounding foam or fibre. It is a clean, quick installation — no adhesive, no fuss. The 6mm hex socket head means you can run these in with a standard hex bit rather than hunting around for something obscure. Drive them in, insert your screw, done.
Where 85mm Plastic Spiral Dowels Get Used
The most common applications are fixing cameras, external lamps, house numbers and light signage to insulated facades or external wall insulation systems. Anywhere a small to medium-weight fitting needs to be attached to a surface that has a polystyrene or mineral fibre layer, these are the appropriate fixing choice.
Ziel-Plast recommends pairing these dowels with a 5.0 x 40mm woodscrew for correct installation. That combination gives the screw enough thread engagement inside the dowel to hold the fitting securely without bottoming out short or pulling through. Worth keeping a box of the right screws on hand if you are fitting these regularly — it is one of those small details that saves a return visit.
A Note on Load Capacity
These are intended for light elements. Think cameras, numbers, small junction boxes, lamp fittings. They are not a structural fixing and are not designed to carry significant point loads. If you are looking at heavier brackets or anything with a dynamic load, you need a different solution entirely. For the applications they are designed for, though, they do the job neatly and efficiently.
At 85mm, they suit typical external wall insulation thicknesses where you still need the screw to reach a reasonable depth. The plastic construction means no corrosion concerns on external facades, which is exactly what you want in a fixing that sits behind a render or cladding system for years without being touched again.
Pro Tip: Always pre-drill a pilot hole slightly narrower than the dowel diameter before driving into polystyrene, particularly in colder weather when the foam is more brittle, to avoid cracking the surrounding material.
