SDS Plus circular electrical box cutter with twin tungsten carbide blades. Cuts a clean 77mm diameter flat-bottomed hole in brick, breeze block and concrete block up to 45 Newton. The essential first step before using a square or rectangular box cutter.
This circular electrical box cutter is the starting point for forming back box recesses in masonry. Before you can drop in a square or rectangular cutter to create a neat recess, you need a circular pilot hole first — and that is exactly what this does. Fitted with twin tungsten carbide blades and an SDS Plus shank, it cuts a 77mm diameter flat-bottomed hole cleanly through brick, breeze block and concrete block, up to a hardness of 45 Newton. No fuss, no drama.
The SDS Plus fitting means it works with any 2kg SDS+ drill that has a roto-stop function. That roto-stop is not optional — you need rotary hammer action only for this cutter, not rotation with hammer, just hammer. Get that wrong and you will know about it quickly. The twin carbide blades handle the hard work, giving you a consistent, clean-edged hole that lets the square cutter follow through without catching or wandering.
Where the Circular Electrical Box Cutter Fits in the Job
The circular cutter works as a precursor to the square box cutter (BCS77N) or the rectangular cutter (BCS154). Think of it as clearing the path. The square cutter cannot start cleanly in solid masonry without that circular recess to reference from, so skipping this step tends to produce ragged holes and frustrated electricians.
On a typical first fix, an electrician or chaser will work along a wall marking out back box positions, use this circular cutter at each point, then follow up with the square cutter to complete the recess. The whole sequence is faster than it sounds once you have a rhythm going.
The kit is suitable for standard single back boxes and can be used as preparation for double box recesses when combined with the appropriate rectangular cutter. Brick and dense concrete block are the natural territory here. Anything softer — plasterboard, timber studwork — does not need this approach at all.
Pro Tip: Always disengage rotation on your SDS drill before using this cutter, rotation with hammer will damage the blades fast and the hole will not be clean.
Used primarily by electricians and first-fix trades to cut circular pilot holes in brick, breeze block and concrete block walls, ready for back box installation. The 77mm diameter hole it produces is the correct size to precede both standard single square box cutters and rectangular cutters for double back boxes. Common on new builds, renovation projects and rewires where flush-mounted sockets and switches are being installed into solid masonry walls.
Best For
- Pre-drilling before square box cutting
- First fix electrical installations
- Solid masonry back box recesses
- Single and double back box preparation
Compatible With
- SDS Plus rotary hammer drills (2kg class)
- Drills with roto-stop function
- Square box cutter BCS77N
- Rectangular cutter BCS154
Key Specifications
- 77mm diameter cut
- Flat-bottomed hole profile
- Twin tungsten carbide blades
- SDS Plus shank
- Max masonry hardness: 45 Newton
- Suitable for brick, breeze block and concrete block
Not suitable for: Not suitable for plasterboard, timber or any masonry above 45 Newton hardness. Do not use with SDS drills set to rotation-only or rotation-plus-hammer mode — hammer-only action is required.
Fit the cutter into your SDS Plus drill and set the drill to hammer-only mode using the roto-stop function. Mark your box position clearly on the wall, hold the cutter square to the surface and apply steady pressure. Let the hammering action do the work — forcing it will not help and may shorten blade life.
Once the circular hole is complete to the correct depth, switch to your square box cutter (BCS77N) or rectangular cutter (BCS154) to finish the recess. Clear debris from the hole before using the square cutter so it seats cleanly and does not bind.
- Mark the centre point of your back box position clearly on the masonry wall
- Insert the SDS Plus shank firmly into your rotary hammer drill
- Set the drill to hammer-only mode using the roto-stop function
- Position the cutter squarely against the wall at your marked point
- Apply firm, steady pressure and allow the hammer action to drive the cutter into the masonry
- Continue until you reach the required depth for your back box recess
- Remove the cutter and clear all dust and debris from the hole
- Follow up with the appropriate square or rectangular box cutter to complete the recess
Do I need to use this circular cutter before a square box cutter, or can I go straight in with the square cutter?
For solid masonry such as brick or dense concrete block, yes, the circular pilot hole is the correct first step. The square cutter needs the circular recess to locate from — without it you will get a rough, uneven hole and put unnecessary stress on the square cutter blades.
Will this work with any SDS Plus drill?
It works with SDS Plus rotary hammer drills in the 2kg class, provided they have a roto-stop function that allows hammer-only mode. That mode is essential. If your drill does not have roto-stop and cannot run hammer-only, this cutter is not compatible.
What is the maximum hardness of masonry this cutter can handle?
The cutter is rated for masonry up to 45 Newton, which covers standard brick, breeze block and concrete block used in most UK domestic and commercial construction. Harder engineering brick or dense aggregate blocks above that rating may damage the blades or produce poor results.
The cutter body accepts an SDS Plus shank and is fitted with twin tungsten carbide blades that chip through masonry under hammer-only action. Tungsten carbide is the standard blade material for masonry cutting at this level, offering good wear resistance across a reasonable volume of holes before regrinding or replacement becomes necessary. The flat-bottomed cut profile is deliberate, designed to match the geometry required before a square box cutter can follow through cleanly.
