A dual dry lining box combining two single gang back boxes in one unit. Available in 35mm and 45mm depths. White finish, suitable for stud partition and plasterboard walls. Straightforward to fit and widely used by electricians on domestic and commercial first fix.
The dual 1G+1G dry lining box is exactly what it sounds like: two single gang boxes in one moulded unit, designed for plasterboard and stud partition walls. Used constantly on first fix electrical work, these boxes take the place of fitting two separate back boxes side by side, which saves time and keeps things neat behind the board. Whether you are running twin sockets, a socket and switch combination, or two separate circuits to the same location, this box handles it without fuss.
Available in both 35mm and 45mm depths, there is enough room for standard socket and switch modules in either depth, though the 45mm version gives installers a little more breathing room when cables are bulky or connections are tight. Worth bearing in mind if you are pulling in twin and earth plus a spur — that extra 10mm makes a difference at the back of the box.
Where the Dual 1G+1G Dry Lining Box Gets Used
Dry lining boxes are the go-to choice wherever plasterboard meets electrical installation. New build housing, office fit-outs, partition wall installations, loft conversions — the list is fairly long. The lugs on the sides grip the plasterboard as the screws are tightened, pulling the box flush and holding it firmly without the need for any additional fixings into the stud. That makes installation quick, even when access is tight or the stud spacing is awkward.
Depth Selection
The 35mm depth works well for most standard installations. The 45mm is the better choice when you are expecting a lot of cable or fitting deeper back box accessories. If in doubt, go deeper — you will not regret it when it comes time to terminate.
The dual 1G+1G dry lining box is a white finish unit and sits flush and clean behind faceplates once installed. It is a simple product, but getting the right depth from the start avoids the kind of rework that nobody wants on a busy site.
Pro Tip: When cutting the aperture in plasterboard, use a jab saw and cut slightly tight rather than loose — the lugs need the board to grip against, and a sloppy hole means a wobbly box no matter how hard you tighten the screws.
These boxes are used wherever electrical outlets, switches, or data points need to be mounted into plasterboard or stud partition walls. Common on new build domestic projects, commercial office fit-outs, and partition wall installations, they are a first fix staple for electricians. The dual format suits twin socket positions, socket and switch combinations, and anywhere two single gang faceplates are needed side by side at the same location.

Not suitable for: Not suitable for solid masonry or concrete walls, where a dry lining pattress or metal back box with wall plugs would be required instead. Not intended for outdoor or damp environment use.
Mark the position on the plasterboard and cut the aperture to size using the box as a template. Feed cables through the knockouts before pushing the box into the hole. Tighten the lug screws until the box is pulled firm against the back of the board and sits flush with the surface. Terminate and connect as required before fitting the faceplate.
- Hold the box against the plasterboard and mark the aperture outline with a pencil
- Cut the hole using a jab saw, keeping the cut tight to the line
- Remove the required knockouts and feed the cables through before inserting the box
- Push the box fully into the aperture so the front rim sits flush with the board surface
- Tighten the lug screws evenly on both sides until the grips bite firmly against the back of the plasterboard
- Terminate the cables, connect the faceplate, and check the box has not shifted during fitting
What is the difference between the 35mm and 45mm depth options?
Both depths accept standard single gang faceplates, but the 45mm version gives you more room at the back for cables and terminations. If you are pulling in multiple cables or using thicker twin and earth, the 45mm is the safer choice. The 35mm is fine for lighter installations with less cable volume.
Can this box be used with any standard single gang faceplate?
Yes. The dual 1G+1G format means each half of the box accepts a standard single gang faceplate, so you can mix and match — a socket on one side and a switch on the other, for example. Most UK 1G faceplates will fit without issue.
Does this box work in all plasterboard thicknesses?
It works with standard plasterboard thicknesses typically found in UK construction, including 9.5mm and 12.5mm board. The lug grip system is adjustable as you tighten the screws, so it accommodates minor variation. Very thin or non-standard board may not provide enough grip for a secure fixing.
Moulded in white plastic, the dual 1G+1G dry lining box uses a lug-and-screw grip fixing system designed specifically for plasterboard installation. The integrated lugs rotate outward as the screws are tightened, clamping the board from behind and holding the box securely without additional fixings. Available in 35mm and 45mm depths to suit different installation requirements.
