SDS Plus circular electrical box cutter with twin tungsten carbide blades. Cuts a clean 77mm diameter flat-bottomed hole in brick, breeze block and concrete block up to 45 Newton. The essential first step before using a square or rectangular box cutter.

Credit Plans Available

This circular electrical box cutter is the starting point for forming back box recesses in masonry. Before you can drop in a square or rectangular cutter to create a neat recess, you need a circular pilot hole first — and that is exactly what this does. Fitted with twin tungsten carbide blades and an SDS Plus shank, it cuts a 77mm diameter flat-bottomed hole cleanly through brick, breeze block and concrete block, up to a hardness of 45 Newton. No fuss, no drama.

The SDS Plus fitting means it works with any 2kg SDS+ drill that has a roto-stop function. That roto-stop is not optional — you need rotary hammer action only for this cutter, not rotation with hammer, just hammer. Get that wrong and you will know about it quickly. The twin carbide blades handle the hard work, giving you a consistent, clean-edged hole that lets the square cutter follow through without catching or wandering.

Where the Circular Electrical Box Cutter Fits in the Job

The circular cutter works as a precursor to the square box cutter (BCS77N) or the rectangular cutter (BCS154). Think of it as clearing the path. The square cutter cannot start cleanly in solid masonry without that circular recess to reference from, so skipping this step tends to produce ragged holes and frustrated electricians.

On a typical first fix, an electrician or chaser will work along a wall marking out back box positions, use this circular cutter at each point, then follow up with the square cutter to complete the recess. The whole sequence is faster than it sounds once you have a rhythm going.

The kit is suitable for standard single back boxes and can be used as preparation for double box recesses when combined with the appropriate rectangular cutter. Brick and dense concrete block are the natural territory here. Anything softer — plasterboard, timber studwork — does not need this approach at all.

Pro Tip: Always disengage rotation on your SDS drill before using this cutter, rotation with hammer will damage the blades fast and the hole will not be clean.
