This premium render mesh does one job extremely well: it stops your render from cracking. Whether you are working on a dodgy old wall with mixed substrates or applying a fresh coat to blockwork, embedding this mesh into your base coat gives you the reinforcement needed to prevent movement cracks appearing six months down the line.

The mesh is made from alkali-resistant fibreglass, which matters because cement-based renders are highly alkaline. Standard fibreglass would degrade over time, but this stuff is treated to withstand that chemical environment for the long haul. At 160gsm with a 4x4mm grid pattern, it provides serious tensile strength without adding bulk to your build-up.

Why Mesh Your Render?

Render fails for predictable reasons. Differential movement between substrates causes stress. Old masonry with repairs and patches moves at different rates. Changes in temperature and moisture make materials expand and contract. Without reinforcement, these forces concentrate at weak points and crack the surface.

Embedding mesh into your scratch coat distributes stress across the entire surface. Instead of one crack forming where two different materials meet, the load spreads through the fibreglass grid. The result is a render system that stays intact even when the substrate behind it wants to move.

This is particularly useful on renovation work where you are dealing with mixed masonry, old lime mortar joints, or walls that have been patched over the years. It also makes sense on any external render where thermal movement is a factor.

Practical Handling

The roll measures 1m wide by 50m long, which covers a decent area without being awkward to transport or store. The mesh cuts cleanly with standard scissors or a knife, and it is light enough that you can hold it in place with one hand while trowelling with the other. Some meshes are so stiff they spring back at you. This one stays where you put it.

Application is straightforward. Apply your scratch coat, press the mesh into the wet render, then trowel over to fully embed it. You want the mesh sitting in the middle of your base coat, not on the surface. Leave it proud and you will see the grid pattern ghosting through your top coat, which is not the look anyone is after.

The pink and white colour options are not about aesthetics. They are about visibility. Being able to see the mesh against your render makes it easier to check for full embedment and spot any areas you have missed.

For external insulation systems, timber frame buildings, or any job where you need belt-and-braces crack prevention, this mesh earns its place in your kit. At 160gsm it is heavier than budget meshes but lighter than structural reinforcement, hitting the sweet spot for standard rendering work.

Pro Tip: Overlap mesh strips by at least 100mm at joints and always embed fully into wet render. If you can still see the grid pattern after trowelling, you have not pushed it in far enough.
