Soudafoam FR is a single-component, ready-to-use polyurethane expanding foam with a fire rating of up to 360 minutes in tested configurations. CFC-free, no ozone-depleting propellants, and suitable for most substrates. Good for fire stopping, cable penetrations, and partitions.
Soudafoam FR is a B1 fire rated expanding foam in a hand-held aerosol can, designed for applications where a basic gap-fill simply won’t cut it. This is a single-component polyurethane foam with no mixing, no cartridge gun required, and a fire performance that has been independently tested to BS 476: Part 20 and EN 1366-4. In the right configuration, it achieves up to 360 minutes of fire resistance — that is four hours, for anyone who has been on site all week and lost track of what day it is.
The hand-held format makes it straightforward to use on the go. Shake, apply, done. It works in all directions from the can, which matters when you are on your back filling a cable penetration in a ceiling void. The foam expands to fill cavities thoroughly, bonds well to masonry, concrete, timber, and most other common substrates, and sets to a stable, non-shrinking cell structure once cured. No post-expansion, no gaps appearing later.
Where B1 Fire Rated Expanding Foam Gets Used
Fire-rated foam earns its place wherever building regulations require passive fire protection at service penetrations or structural junctions. It is a different product to standard foam, and it should be treated that way on site. This is not a draught-sealing foam dressed up in fire-retardant language. The tested performance figures reflect specific application configurations, so it is worth reading the enclosed test table before specifying it for a fire compartment.
Thermal and Acoustic Performance
Beyond the fire rating, Soudafoam FR also provides useful thermal insulation and acoustic damping. It is commonly used around window and door frames in partition walls, at junctions between walls, floors and ceilings, around pipe and cable entries, and anywhere that both fire stopping and insulation contribute to the build performance. The propellants used are CFC and HCFC-free, which keeps it on the right side of environmental regulations. Cured foam can be painted over once fully set, provided UV-exposed surfaces are top-coated with a compatible sealant.
Pro Tip: Always fill cavities to around 80% capacity and leave room for expansion — overfilling a tight penetration can cause the foam to bow out the surrounding material before it cures.
This foam is used wherever passive fire protection is required at penetrations, junctions, and service entries in fire-rated construction. Common applications include sealing around cable and pipe penetrations through walls and floors, installing window and door frames in fire-compartment partitions, and filling gaps at connections between partition walls, ceilings and floor slabs. It is also used in roof constructions where sealed openings are needed, and in cold store builds where thermal insulation and fire resistance both need addressing in the same detail.
Best For
- Fire stopping at cable and pipe penetrations
- Window and door frame installation in fire-rated partitions
- Sealing wall, floor and ceiling junctions
- Filling cavities requiring fire retardant performance
- Thermal and acoustic insulation sealing
Compatible Surfaces
- Masonry and concrete
- Timber
- Steel and metal frames
- Most plasterboard and partition systems
- Not suitable for Teflon, polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP)
Key Properties
- Fire rating up to 360 minutes in tested configurations
- Smoke and gas seal
- CFC and HCFC-free propellants
- No shrink or post-expansion once cured
- Paintable after full cure
- Working temperature 5°C to 35°C
- Tested to BS 476: Part 20 and EN 1366-4
Not suitable for: Not suitable for use on Teflon, polyethylene or polypropylene surfaces, where adhesion will fail. Fire performance figures apply to specific tested configurations only — always refer to the enclosed test table before using this product in a fire-rated assembly.
Shake the can for at least 20 seconds before use and repeat shaking regularly throughout the job. Lightly moisten the surfaces to be filled with water before applying — PU foam cures by reacting with moisture, so damp surfaces help it set properly, especially in dry or warm conditions.
Fill cavities to approximately 80% of their volume. The foam will expand to fill the remaining space. Overfilling wastes product and can cause problems in tight penetrations. The can works in all directions, which is genuinely useful for overhead and awkward-angle applications. Release pressure on the applicator to stop flow. If applying in layers, re-moisten between each pass.
Fresh uncured foam can be cleaned up with Soudal Foamcleaner or acetone. Once cured it can only be removed mechanically, so protect any surfaces you want to keep clean before you start. Any foam left exposed to UV light after curing should be sealed with paint or a compatible sealant such as silicone, MS polymer, acrylic, or PU sealant.
- Shake the aerosol can vigorously for at least 20 seconds before use
- Lightly moisten the surfaces to be filled using a water sprayer
- Attach the adapter to the valve on the can
- Apply foam to fill the cavity or penetration to approximately 80% of its volume
- Shake the can again regularly during application to maintain consistent foam quality
- Release applicator pressure to stop foam flow at any point
- If applying in multiple layers, re-moisten each previous layer before continuing
- Allow foam to fully expand and cure before trimming or over-finishing
- Seal any UV-exposed cured foam surfaces with paint or a compatible sealant
Does this foam actually achieve 4 hours of fire resistance in all configurations?
The 360-minute fire rating applies to specific tested configurations as documented in the enclosed test table. The performance figures are based on independent tests to BS 476: Part 20 and EN 1366-4. Always check the test table for your specific application detail before using this product in a fire-rated assembly.
Can I use this foam for standard draught sealing and insulation jobs as well as fire stopping?
Yes. Soudafoam FR also provides good thermal and acoustic insulation, so it works well around window and door frames, at wall and floor junctions, and around pipe entries where both insulation and fire performance are needed. It is simply a more capable foam than a standard PU product.
What is the difference between the hand-held can and a gun-applied version?
The hand-held can is self-contained and needs no applicator gun, making it ideal for occasional use or smaller jobs where you do not want to set up a foam gun. Gun-applied versions typically give better control over output and tend to be more economical on larger runs of work. For one-off penetrations or site visits, the hand-held format is the quicker option.
Soudafoam FR is a one-component, moisture-curing polyurethane foam formulated with fire-retardant additives to achieve up to 360 minutes of fire resistance in tested configurations. It has been independently tested to BS 476: Part 20 at Warrington Fire Research (Report 113610) and to EN 1366-4 at the University of Ghent to NBN 713.020. Propellants are CFC and HCFC-free. Working temperature range is 5°C to 35°C, with 20°C to 25°C recommended for optimal expansion and cure.
