When you need hand held fire rated expanding foam that actually meets a recognised fire classification, this is the one to reach for. Soudafoam B2 is a one-component, self-expanding polyurethane foam supplied in a standard 750ml handheld can — no applicator gun needed, just the straw nozzle that comes with it. It meets German Fire Class B2 under DIN 4102-Part 1, which makes it suitable for use wherever a degree of fire resistance is required around building penetrations and service entries.
The propellant is completely CFC-free, so there is no ozone impact from using it. It cures by reacting with moisture in the air and in the substrate, expanding to fill the cavity before setting firm. Once cured, the foam forms a tight, rigid seal that resists air movement and provides the fire resistance the job calls for.
Most standard expanding foam is fine for draught sealing and general gap filling, but it offers no meaningful protection in a fire situation. Soudafoam B2 is the correct choice when you are sealing around pipes, cables, conduits or ductwork passing through fire compartment walls or floors. It is the kind of product that tends to get specified, and rightly so — using the wrong foam in a fire-rated application is not a shortcut anyone wants to take.
Where Handheld Fire Rated Expanding Foam Gets Used
The handheld format is ideal for single trades working on relatively contained jobs. Electricians, plumbers and mechanical engineers use it regularly when making good around service penetrations. It works equally well on new-build projects and refurbishments, anywhere the spec calls for a fire-rated seal at a gap or void.
Ease of Use on Site
Ready to use straight from the can. Shake well, attach the straw nozzle, and apply from the bottom of the cavity upward. The foam expands to roughly two to three times its dispensed volume, so fill the gap partially and let it do the work. Trim any excess once fully cured.
Pro Tip: Lightly dampen the surfaces and cavity with water before applying — polyurethane foam cures by reacting with moisture, and a damp substrate will give you a more consistent cure and better adhesion, especially in dry conditions.
Soudafoam B2 is used wherever service penetrations pass through fire-rated walls, floors or ceilings. Electricians use it around conduit and cable bundles, plumbers around pipe entries, and builders use it to seal around ductwork and other mechanical services. It is equally at home on new builds where fire compartmentalisation is part of the design, and on refurbishment projects where existing penetrations need to be brought up to standard.
Best For
- Fire-rated wall and floor penetrations
- Cable and conduit entry sealing
- Pipe penetrations through compartment walls
- Ductwork and mechanical service gaps
- New build and refurbishment fire stopping
Compatible Surfaces
- Concrete
- Brick and blockwork
- Plasterboard
- Timber
- Metal
Key Properties
- Fire Class B2 to DIN 4102-Part 1
- CFC-free propellant
- One-component, ready to use
- Self-expanding polyurethane
- No applicator gun required
- 750ml handheld can
Not suitable for: Not suitable as a structural filler or load-bearing application. This foam meets B2 fire class, which is a flame-retardant rating — it should not be used as a substitute for full passive fire protection systems where a higher classification is specified.
Shake the can thoroughly for at least 30 seconds before use. Lightly moisten the cavity and surrounding surfaces with water — this helps the foam cure evenly. Attach the straw nozzle, invert the can, and fill the cavity from the bottom upward to around one third to half full, as the foam will expand significantly as it cures.
Allow the foam to cure fully before trimming — typically a few hours depending on temperature and humidity, though full cure takes longer. Once set, trim any proud foam flush with the surface using a sharp knife. Do not paint or plaster over uncured foam.
- Shake the can vigorously for at least 30 seconds
- Lightly dampen the cavity and surrounding substrate with water
- Attach the straw nozzle supplied with the can
- Invert the can and insert the straw into the base of the cavity
- Apply foam to fill roughly one third to half the cavity depth
- Allow the foam to expand and begin to skin before assessing the fill
- Leave to cure fully before trimming — do not disturb while curing
- Trim any excess foam flush using a sharp knife once fully set
Does this foam meet UK fire rating requirements?
Soudafoam B2 is certified to German Fire Class B2 under DIN 4102-Part 1, which is a widely recognised European fire classification for flame retardancy. Always check your specific project specification to confirm this rating is acceptable — some jobs call for a higher classification or a fully passive fire stopping system with separate documentation.
Do I need a special gun to use this foam?
No. This is a handheld can that comes with a straw nozzle, so no applicator gun is needed. It is ready to use straight from the can, which makes it ideal for smaller jobs or when you only need to seal a few penetrations.
Can I use standard expanding foam instead if I do not have B2 to hand?
Not where a fire-rated seal is required. Standard polyurethane foam has no meaningful fire resistance and would not meet the requirements of a fire compartmentation detail. Soudafoam B2 exists specifically for this reason — it is the correct product for fire-rated penetration sealing and should not be substituted.
Soudafoam B2 is a one-component polyurethane foam that cures by reacting with atmospheric and substrate moisture. The formulation incorporates flame-retardant additives to achieve compliance with DIN 4102-Part 1 Fire Class B2. The propellant system is entirely CFC-free. Once cured, the foam is rigid, closed-cell in structure, and resistant to air infiltration. It bonds well to most common construction substrates including masonry, timber, metal and plasterboard.
