Copper clout nails are the go-to fixing for natural slate roofing, and for good reason. Unlike galvanised or bright steel, copper doesn’t rust. On a slate roof that’s expected to last 80 to 100 years, that matters. These 1kg copper clout nails are available in a wide range of sizes, from 25mm all the way up to 65mm in length, with shank diameters from 2.65mm to 3.35mm, so you can match the nail to the slate thickness and batten gauge without compromise.

The large flat head is what makes a clout nail a clout nail. It spreads the load across the surface of the slate rather than pulling through, which is particularly important on natural stone where a small fixing point under stress can eventually cause cracking. Done right, a copper nail and a natural slate are a pretty good long-term partnership.

Where Copper Clout Nails Are Used on Site

The obvious application is natural slate roofing, where copper is essentially the only sensible choice. Lead flashing, copper sheet work, and some fibre cement slate systems also call for copper fixings to avoid the galvanic corrosion you’d get if you mixed metals. Roofing felt and underlay can also be tacked with smaller copper clout nails where the substrate or specification calls for it.

The range of sizes here covers most roofing scenarios. Shorter nails in the 25mm to 32mm range suit thinner slates on closer-boarded decks. Longer options like 45mm, 50mm, and 65mm come into their own on deeper battens or where the slate itself is on the thicker side. Worth checking your specification before ordering if you’re working to an architect’s schedule, since some heritage or conservation projects will specify minimum shank diameters as well as length.

Supplied in 1kg bags, these are practical for both one-off repairs and larger re-roofing jobs. A kilogram goes further than you might expect on the lighter gauges, less so on the heavier 3.35mm shank sizes. If you’re pricing up a full roof, it’s worth working out your quantities accurately rather than guessing. Call us for bulk buy pricing if you need more than a few bags.

Pro Tip: Always nail slate at the correct nailing point, typically 25mm to 35mm from the top edge of the slate, not the centre, to avoid stress fractures and ensure the nail head bears properly against the back face.
