KA Tanking Slurry 25kg is a cementitious waterproofing system designed to stop water ingress through concrete and masonry structures. Whether you’re dealing with a leaking basement, a damp cellar or a structural water tank that needs to hold tight, this is the kind of product that does what it says without any drama. It comes as a dry powder, you mix it with water on site, and apply it directly to the substrate. Simple enough in principle, though the preparation work is where most of the effort goes.
The chemistry behind it is worth understanding. Once applied, KA Tanking Slurry forms insoluble crystals within the capillaries and fine fissures of the substrate. These crystals grow into the structure itself, blocking the passage of water permanently rather than just coating the surface. That means it can work against hydrostatic pressure from either side, which opens up applications that a surface membrane simply cannot handle. You can apply it to the positive side (the wet face) or the negative side (the dry face), which is useful when access to the water-bearing face is limited.

For active leaks and blow-holes before applying the slurry coat, KA Super Plug is the recommended companion product. Get the leaks stopped first, then apply the slurry system over the top. Each 25kg tub is available in buff or grey to suit different finishing preferences or subsequent decoration requirements.
Pro Tip: Always pre-wet the surface thoroughly before applying KA Tanking Slurry, and keep it damp during curing too. If the substrate dries out too fast it pulls moisture from the slurry before the crystals have properly formed, and you will end up with a weak, powdery coat that will not perform.
KA Tanking Slurry is used wherever a cementitious surface needs to be made permanently watertight. On the domestic side that typically means basement conversions, cellars, garage undercrofts and bathroom wet areas. Not suitable for: KA Tanking Slurry is not suitable for structurally compromised or cracked substrates where movement is ongoing. It requires a sound, stable base to work correctly and should not be used as a substitute for structural repair.
Surface preparation is everything with this product. The substrate must be structurally sound, clean, free from contamination and pre-wetted before you start. Any active leaks should be stopped with KA Super Plug before applying the slurry system.
Mix the powder with clean water to a smooth slurry consistency, then apply in two coats using a stiff brush or rendering technique. Work the first coat well into the surface, allow it to reach initial set, then apply the second coat. Keep the treated surface damp for at least 24 hours after application to allow the crystallisation process to develop properly.
Inspect the substrate and carry out any structural repairs before starting
Stop any active leaks using KA Super Plug and allow to set
Clean the surface thoroughly, removing all loose material, laitance, paint and contaminants
Pre-wet the surface with clean water until it is thoroughly damp but not free-standing wet
Mix KA Tanking Slurry powder with clean water to a smooth, lump-free slurry consistency
Apply the first coat by brush, working the material firmly into the surface
Allow the first coat to reach initial set, then dampen the surface again before applying the second coat
Apply the second coat to complete the system and achieve the required film build
Keep the treated surface moist for a minimum of 24 hours to allow proper crystal development
Can KA Tanking Slurry be applied to the dry side of a wall rather than the wet face?
Yes. One of the genuine advantages of this product is that it works on both the positive side (wet face) and the negative side (dry face). This is particularly useful in basement applications where you cannot reasonably access the external face of the wall. The crystal-forming action works into the substrate from whichever side it is applied.
Does it need to be used with any other KA products?
For active leaks or blow-holes in the substrate, KA Super Plug should be used first to stop the water before the slurry system goes on. Applying tanking slurry over a running leak is not effective. Get the holes plugged, let them set, then apply the slurry over the full area.
What is the difference between the buff and grey versions?
The performance is the same. The colour difference is mainly relevant if the surface will be left visible or if the slurry coat will be seen under subsequent finishes. Grey tends to blend better under cement-based renders and tiles, while buff can be preferable where a lighter finish is required or where the slurry will be painted over.
