Select the correct gauge and length for your material thickness. As a general rule, the screw should penetrate the receiving timber by at least two thirds of the total screw length for a solid hold. For hardwoods or dense sheet materials, drill a pilot hole first to prevent splitting and make driving easier.
Use a Pozidriv bit, not a Phillips. The two look similar but a Phillips bit will slip in a Pozidriv head under load, chewing out the recess and giving you a bad time.
