Sandbags are one of those things you don’t think about until you really need them, and then you need a lot of them, fast. This pack of 50 covers a decent run of temporary flood defence, weighing down road signs in bad weather, securing tarpaulins on site, or holding down temporary structures like gazebos and barriers. Available in hessian or polypropylene, both materials do the job well, but they have their differences.
The hessian option is made from natural biodegradable material, which matters if you’re working on a site where environmental impact is a consideration, or if the bags will be left in place for a period and you don’t want to recover every single one. Hessian also grips well when stacked, which helps when you’re building up a temporary flood wall quickly under pressure. Not the moment to be dealing with bags sliding about.
Where Sandbags Get Used
The polypropylene version is UV stable, which makes it the better choice for longer-term outdoor use where the bags will be exposed to direct sunlight. Left in the sun for weeks, hessian will degrade and weaken, while polypropylene holds up considerably better. For flood defence deployed in summer, or for ongoing use around construction sites, polypropylene is worth the consideration.
Both types come with a string tie at the top for closing off once filled. Simple, but it matters when you’re filling fifty bags by hand and every second counts. Each bag measures approximately 33.5 x 80cm or 34 x 75cm depending on variant, which gives a good usable volume once filled with sand, soil, or aggregate.
Fifty bags per pack keeps the cost down and makes sure you’ve got enough on hand for a meaningful deployment rather than a token gesture. Flood water doesn’t wait for a second delivery.
Pro Tip: Fill sandbags to roughly two thirds capacity rather than full, as a less-than-st■ bag flattens and forms a tighter seal against uneven ground when stacked.
