Sherardised square twist nails are the go-to fixing when you are working with builders metalwork on site. Joist hangers, truss clips, restraint straps, hurricane ties — anything that comes with pre-punched holes and needs a nail that will actually stay put. The twisted shank is the key here: as the nail drives in, it grips the surrounding timber fibres rather than just displacing them, which gives you significantly better pull-out resistance than a plain shank nail of the same diameter. That matters when the metalwork is doing a structural job.

These nails conform to Eurocode 5 and are rated for service class 2, which covers most covered but potentially damp environments — think roof spaces, subfloors, and external structures that are protected from direct wetting but not from humidity. If you are working on timber frame buildings or anything where the structural connections need to meet current engineering standards, that compliance is worth knowing about before you start.

Sherardised Coating and What It Actually Does

Sherardising is a zinc diffusion process that bonds zinc into the surface of the steel rather than just coating it. The result is a finish that holds up considerably better than electroplated zinc in damp or mildly corrosive conditions. For site metalwork in service class 2 environments, it gives you the medium duty rust protection the job requires without stepping up to stainless or hot-dip galvanised. It also means the coating does not flake off during driving, which is a practical advantage over some electroplated alternatives.

Available Sizes

These come in two sizes: 30 x 3.75mm and 40 x 3.75mm, both in TIMbag packs available in 0.5kg or 1kg weights. The 30mm length suits lighter gauge metalwork and thinner timber sections, while the 40mm is better suited to heavier connectors where you need more embedment. Most structural metalwork manufacturers specify a minimum nail length, so it is worth checking before you commit to a size. Sold by weight, so the actual nail count will vary slightly, but a 1kg bag gives you plenty of stock for a day’s fixing work on a typical roof or floor structure.

Pro Tip: Check the metalwork manufacturer's installation guide before starting — most specify a minimum number of nails per connector and some require specific nail lengths, so using the wrong size can affect both performance and any structural warranty.
