The Bosch Expert SelfCut Speed Spade Bit in 22mm is one of those bits that reminds you what a difference good tooling makes. If you’ve ever forced a cheap flat bit through a joist while it clogs, wanders and scorches the timber, you’ll know immediately what this one is doing differently. The bosch 22mm spade bit uses Bosch’s own Tip Technology, a self-feeding screw thread at the point that pulls the bit into the material rather than relying on you to push. Less effort, better control, faster cutting. Simple as that.

The 22mm diameter is a size that comes up constantly on site. Cable runs, conduit, service penetrations through stud work and joists — 22mm is right in the sweet spot for 20mm conduit and a good range of cable bundles. At 152mm total length it reaches comfortably through a standard stud or floor joist without the bit bottoming out before you’re through.

What Makes the Bosch Expert SelfCut Speed Bit Worth Using

The wave-shaped spade profile is the other bit of clever design here. Traditional flat bits tend to pack chips into the flute, which slows the cut and builds heat. The wave geometry on this bit clears waste material upward and out of the hole far more efficiently. In practice that means you can run through a series of holes at pace without constantly backing out to clear the bit. For an electrician first-fixing a house, or a plumber running pipe through multiple joists, that kind of throughput adds up quickly.

The 1/4 inch hex shank fits both standard three-jaw drill chucks and hex chuck drill drivers or impact drivers directly. No adaptor needed in most cases. Worth noting that while these bits will seat in an impact driver, spade bits generally perform better in a standard drill or drill driver where you have more control over speed and the bit isn’t subjected to rotational hammering. More on that in the trade tip below.

Part of the Bosch Expert Range

This bit sits in Bosch’s Expert line rather than the entry-level Standard range. The material quality and the precision of the tip geometry reflect that. It’s not the cheapest 22mm spade bit you’ll find, but for anyone drilling repeatedly rather than occasionally, the speed and cleanliness of the cut justifies the difference. If you’re buying for a one-off job, fair enough. If you’re on site regularly, it’s the obvious choice.

Pro Tip: Run spade bits at a higher speed with moderate feed pressure rather than low speed with heavy force, the self-feeding tip does the work and forcing it will just burn the cutting edge.
