Galvanised clout nails are the standard fixing for roofing felt, and for good reason. The large flat head spreads the load across the felt surface, reducing the chance of the material tearing through under wind uplift or movement. These roofing felt nails conform to Eurocode 5 and are rated for service class 2, meaning they are suitable for covered exterior environments where moisture exposure is moderate and ongoing.
The hot-dip galvanised coating provides medium-duty rust protection, which is what you need when nails are sitting beneath roofing felt or battens and exposed to condensation and damp over time. Bare steel nails will corrode quickly in these conditions and can stain the materials around them. Galvanised clout nails hold their integrity far longer, keeping the fix secure and the surface clean.
Clout Nail Sizes and Gauges
These nails are available in a range of sizes to suit different applications. The 25 x 2.65mm and 30 x 2.65mm sizes are well suited to lightweight roofing felt on flat roofs and timber-framed structures. The 40mm and 50mm lengths in 2.65mm gauge cover most standard pitched roof felt work, while the heavier 3.35mm and 3.75mm gauges in the longer lengths give more holding power when fixing into thicker battens or harder timber. The 65mm and 75mm options in the heavier gauge are worth having when you need a bit more depth, particularly in older or denser timber.
Packs come in 0.5kg, 1kg and 2.5kg sizes, available in TIMbag or TIMtub format. The tub is the practical choice on site as it stays open without spilling and keeps nails dry between jobs. For larger roofing contracts, the 2.5kg packs are the sensible buy.
Eurocode 5 and Service Class 2
These roofing felt nails conform to Eurocode 5, the structural design standard for timber structures, and are rated for service class 2. This covers conditions where timber moisture content may occasionally exceed 20%, which is typical in ventilated roof spaces and covered exterior applications. It is worth knowing this if you are working on projects that require documented compliance.

Pro Tip: When fixing roofing felt in cold weather, the felt becomes less flexible and more prone to tearing around the nail head, so space your clout nails closer together along the laps and edges rather than relying on wider spacing to compensate.
