An HDG drive in post spike is one of those fencing solutions that makes you wonder why anyone still bothers with a post hole digger. No digging, no bags of postcrete, no waiting for concrete to cure before you can get the gate hung. You drive the spike in, drop the post into the socket, tighten the bolt, and get on with the rest of the job. Simple as that.
These spikes are hot dip galvanised, which gives them proper long-term protection against rust and corrosion rather than the thin electro-zinc coating you find on cheaper alternatives. That matters when you’re putting something in the ground and expecting it to still be solid in ten years. The HDG finish handles wet soil, heavy rain, and everything the British weather throws at a fence line without flaking or corroding at the base where it matters most.
Where HDG Drive In Post Spikes Earn Their Keep
The four-fin spike design spreads the load as it goes into the ground, which resists the lateral movement that causes posts to lean over time. Wind loading on a fence panel puts real sideways force on the post base, and the fins grip the surrounding soil to resist it. The bolt-through socket clamps the post firmly once it’s seated, so there’s no wobble at the collar either.
Available in a range of sizes to suit different post sections, from 50mm through to 100mm square, and in lengths from 300mm up to 750mm. The longer spikes are worth using in softer or sandy ground where a shorter spike might pull over under load. Rocky or very stony ground is a different matter, but on a typical garden or field boundary, these go in cleanly with a post driver or a lump hammer and a driving cap.
At this price, it’s easy to keep a few of each size on the van. Far better than turning up to a fencing job and realising you’re short on the 75x450s.
Pro Tip: Always use a proper driving cap or steel dolly over the spike when hammering in to protect the socket walls and keep the spike plumb as it goes down.
