The end feed reduced coupling is one of those fittings that doesn’t get much attention until you need one and don’t have it. It steps a copper pipe run down from one diameter to another in a single fitting, saving you an extra equal coupling and a reducer. Three sizes are available: 15x10mm, 22x15mm and 28x22mm, covering the transitions you’ll encounter most often on domestic and light commercial plumbing work.
These fittings are WRAS approved, which matters if you’re working on anything connected to a potable water supply. WRAS approval means the fitting has been independently assessed and confirmed as suitable for contact with drinking water, so there’s no grey area when it comes to compliance on those jobs. It’s the kind of detail that makes sign-off straightforward rather than awkward.
Where End Feed Reduced Couplings Get Used
End feed fittings require solder, which puts some people off, but they’re actually well suited to tight spaces where a compression fitting’s bulk would be a problem. They sit flush, they’re low profile, and once sweated correctly they’re as permanent as the pipework itself. You’re not going to find one weeping twelve months down the line the way a poorly assembled compression fitting can.
Sold in boxes of 25, these are priced and packaged for trade use. If you’re running multiple drops off a 22mm main or reducing down from a 28mm flow to a 22mm branch on a heating circuit, having a box to hand means the job keeps moving. Running out of reducers halfway through a first fix is the kind of thing that costs you time and margin in equal measure.
The copper construction and clean bore means flow restriction is minimal through the fitting, and compatibility with standard copper tube to EN 1057 is as you’d expect. Solder up, pressure test, move on.
Pro Tip: When soldering an end feed reduced coupling in a tight spot, apply flux to both pipe ends before fitting and heat the body of the fitting evenly rather than concentrating the flame on one side, or you'll draw the solder away from the cooler socket.
