KA Products 5L SBR bonding is a premium high-strength styrene butadiene rubber liquid used as a bonding agent and admixture across plastering, rendering, screeding and general building work. If you’ve ever had a plaster coat delaminate off a difficult substrate, or a screed that looked perfect and then cracked up three weeks later, the answer is usually better prep — and SBR is a big part of that. Diluted and brushed on as a bonding slurry, or added directly into the mix, it significantly improves adhesion and flexibility where plain cement or plaster alone just won’t hold.

SBR has been a staple on UK building sites for decades. The KA Products version sits at the premium end of what is available at this price point, offering good consistency and reliable performance across the typical applications you’d encounter in plastering, groundworks and general construction. It’s not a niche product — it earns its place on the van.

Where KA Products 5L SBR Bonding Gets Used

The most common use is as a bonding coat before applying gypsum plaster to low-suction or contaminated surfaces. Mix with cement and water to a creamy slurry, brush it on, and plaster into it while still tacky. It’s also regularly added to floor levelling compounds as a latex-style admixture, improving flow and reducing cracking risk. Flooring screeds benefit in the same way — particularly repair screeds where bonding to an existing base is critical.

Beyond Plastering

SBR works well for waterproof render coats, patching, repointing, and bedding work. KA Products also recommend it for use alongside their own tanking slurry, where it acts as a primer and bonding agent in the waterproofing system. In suction control applications — think of a very absorbent block or brick that would otherwise pull moisture from a render or screed before it has time to cure properly — diluted SBR brushed on first can save a lot of grief later. It’s one of those products that quietly prevents problems rather than solving them after the fact.

At 5 litres, this is a practical working size for a trade job or ongoing site use. Available in boxes of 20 for anyone who gets through it regularly.

Pro Tip: When using SBR as a bonding slurry before plastering, apply it to the correct tackiness — if it goes fully glossy and dries hard before you plaster over it, you've missed the window and you'll need to re-coat.
