The Makita BL1860 is an 18V 6.0Ah lithium-ion battery compatible with the full Makita LXT range. Longer runtime than the 4.0Ah and 5.0Ah cells, with built-in protection against overload, over-discharge, and overheating.

Credit Plans Available

The Makita BL1860 18V 6Ah Li-Ion battery is the highest-capacity standard LXT battery in the Makita range, designed for tradespeople who need sustained power across long shifts without stopping to swap cells. If you are running drills, saws, grinders, or combination hammers on site all day, this is the battery that keeps up. The makita 6ah battery is compatible with the entire Makita 18V LXT platform, which covers well over 200 tools, so one battery works across your whole kit.

At 6.0Ah, the BL1860 offers a significant step up in runtime compared to the 4.0Ah and 5.0Ah alternatives. That extra capacity is most noticeable on high-draw tools: angle grinders, reciprocating saws, and circular saws are where the difference between a 4.0Ah and a 6.0Ah cell becomes obvious, especially on long cuts or continuous use. With lighter tools, the runtime difference is still there, but less critical to the job.

What the Makita BL1860 Includes Under the Casing

The BL1860 uses Makita’s Star Protection system, which allows the battery and tool to communicate in real time. The battery monitors its own temperature, current draw, and discharge level, and will cut power before damage occurs. This matters in practice because it protects both the battery and the tool from situations that shorten their working life, such as running a saw under heavy load in warm conditions or accidentally leaving a tool switched on in a bag.

The cell chemistry is lithium-ion, which means no memory effect and no need to run the battery flat before recharging. You can top it up between jobs without any penalty to long-term capacity. The BL1860 is also compatible with Makita’s rapid chargers, including the DC18RC and DC18RD, which can bring a flat 6.0Ah cell back to full charge in around 55 minutes. If you are running two batteries and one charger, that turnaround is fast enough to keep most jobs moving.

Charge Indicator

The BL1860 has a built-in LED charge indicator with three lights. Press the button on the side and it gives you a quick read on remaining capacity. It is not a precise fuel gauge, but it is enough to tell you whether to top up before a long job or keep going.

The Makita 6Ah battery weighs around 640 grams, which is heavier than the 3.0Ah and 4.0Ah options. On handheld tools used overhead for extended periods, that weight adds up. For most standard site tasks, it is a fair trade for the runtime. For sustained overhead work, consider keeping a lighter cell as a second option.

The BL1860 is sold individually. If you are building out a battery platform or replacing a worn cell, it pairs well with any Makita LXT 18V tool without adapters or modification.

Pro Tip: If you are using the BL1860 on a high-draw tool like a grinder or circular saw in cold weather, give the battery a few minutes to warm up before pushing it hard, as lithium-ion cells deliver noticeably less power below 5 degrees Celsius.
