Fence post caps are one of those small fittings that do a straightforward job well. The top of a fence post takes the brunt of rainfall, frost, and standing water, and without protection the end grain soaks it all up. Over time that leads to splitting, rot, and posts that need replacing far sooner than they should. These oxide red powder-coated fence post caps sit over the post top, shed water, and keep the end grain dry. It is a simple fix that genuinely extends the life of the post.

The oxide red powder coat finish gives these caps a clean, consistent appearance that blends naturally with standard red-oxide-primed steelwork and traditionally painted fencing. The powder coat also protects the steel cap itself from rust, so the cap stays looking presentable rather than staining the post below. If oxide red is not your colour, the caps take paint readily and can be overpainted to match whatever colour scheme the fence runs to. A tin of exterior metal paint and ten minutes is all it takes.

Where Fence Post Caps Get Used

These caps are designed for square post tops and are available in three sizes to cover the most common post dimensions: 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm. That covers everything from lightweight trellis support posts through to heavier structural fence posts used in close-board or palisade fencing. Whether the posts are timber, steel, or concrete, the cap sits over the top and provides weather protection without any fixings required in most cases.

The fit should be snug. A cap that rattles around in the wind tends to collect water underneath rather than shed it, which rather defeats the point. If the fit feels a little loose, a small bead of exterior sealant around the inside rim before fitting will sort that out and keep things watertight.

Finishing the Job Properly

On new fencing, fitting post caps at the end of the job takes minutes and saves problems later. On existing fencing where post tops are already showing early signs of weathering, fitting a cap over a cleaned and treated post top will slow further deterioration. It will not reverse damage that has already gone deep into the timber, but it stops things getting worse. Treat the post first, let it dry, then cap it.

The oxide red powder coat is durable enough for permanent outdoor use and will handle normal UK weather without issue. If the caps are going onto a fence that is being painted as part of a larger job, prime the cap with a metal primer before applying topcoat for the best adhesion and long-term finish.

Sold individually, so you can order exactly the quantity you need rather than working around pack sizes that do not suit the job.

Pro Tip: If you are fitting caps to rough-sawn timber posts where the section size varies slightly, a thin bead of frame sealant run around the inside of the cap before pressing it down gives a weathertight seal and stops the cap lifting in high wind.
