The 50mm PZ2 impact driver bit is one of those things that lives permanently in a tool bag — until it snaps at the wrong moment on a Friday afternoon. These PZ2 impact driver bits are built from a new-generation metal composition developed specifically for impact driving, where the forces involved are a world away from what a standard bit was designed to handle. The torsion zone sits in the body of the bit and flexes under load rather than fighting it, which is why they last considerably longer than cheaper alternatives.

A dedicated heat treatment process is applied during manufacture to optimise hardness throughout the bit. Importantly, the body is slightly softer than the tip — that is not a flaw, it is deliberate. When an impact driver fires, the downward and rotational forces arrive together and fast. A bit that is uniformly hard will shatter. One that can give a little in the right place will keep going. This is the engineering behind bits that actually survive a full day’s work rather than a couple of hours of decking or first-fix framing.

Where These PZ2 Impact Bits Earn Their Keep

PZ2 is the most commonly used bit size on UK building sites. It covers the vast majority of general-purpose screws: timber screws, drywall screws, decking screws, and the bulk of bagged cabinet hardware. At 50mm, the bit sits far enough into the chuck to give you good control without wobble, and the extra length is useful when driving into awkward spaces or through thick materials where a 25mm bit would have the driver body getting in the way. First fix, second fix, site joinery, shopfitting — the 50mm PZ2 works across all of it.

The black phosphate finish does a practical job too. It reduces surface corrosion when bits end up loose in a damp tool belt or the bottom of a site bag, which they inevitably do. It also reduces glare, which sounds trivial until you are working under bright task lighting for six hours straight.

Supplied in a pack of five, these bits are priced to be used rather than rationed. Keep a handful in the bag, a few in the driver kit, and stop hunting for the last surviving bit every time a new job starts. Simple idea, executed well.

Pro Tip: When a PZ2 bit starts to cam out even on fresh screws, it is worn and should be replaced straight away — a damaged tip damages screw heads faster than you'd think, and on visible joinery that becomes a finishing problem, not just a fixing problem.
