PVC stop bead provides a straight, protected edge wherever plaster meets an opening, reveal or junction. Rather than relying on a trowelled finish that chips and crumbles over time, the bead creates a defined termination point with a rigid nose that takes the knocks of daily use. Window reveals, door frames, wall-to-ceiling junctions and any edge exposed to traffic benefit from this simple addition to the plastering process.
The bead itself consists of a perforated PVC wing that keys into the plaster coat, connected to a visible nose section that forms the finished edge. Once the plaster is applied and set, the nose sits flush with the surface, providing a factory-straight line that would take considerable skill to achieve freehand. For plasterers working to tight deadlines across multiple rooms, the time saved on each opening adds up quickly.
Choosing the Right Depth
Stop beads are sized by the depth of plaster they accommodate. The 6mm version suits skim coats over plasterboard, where the total build-up is minimal. The 10mm bead works with standard two-coat work on blockwork or brick, while the 15mm option handles thicker applications including renovation work where levels need building up. Selecting the correct depth ensures the nose finishes flush rather than proud or recessed, which matters both for appearance and for the painter who follows.
Material and Durability
PVC construction means these beads resist moisture without corroding. In bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms where humidity levels fluctuate, PVC maintains its integrity where galvanised steel alternatives might eventually show rust through the paint. The material also allows slight flex during installation, which helps when fitting to openings that are not quite square. Most openings are not quite square.
Each length measures 2.5 metres, sufficient to run the full height of a standard doorway with minimal waste. For window reveals, a single length typically covers the head and one jamb, keeping joint lines to a minimum. The boxes contain either 34 or 50 lengths depending on bead size, allowing bulk purchasing for sites with multiple rooms to finish.
Installation follows standard plastering bead practice. The bead fixes to the background using dabs of bonding or the base coat itself, positioned so the nose aligns with the intended finished surface. Once the plaster is applied to meet the bead, the perforations in the wing provide mechanical key, locking everything together as the material sets. Any plaster that gets on the nose wipes off easily before it hardens.
Stop beads work alongside other plastering accessories in the DTS range. Angle beads protect external corners, thin coat beads suit machine-applied plaster systems, and movement beads accommodate structural joints. Using the right bead for each situation produces work that looks professional and performs reliably for years after the scaffolding comes down.
Pro Tip: Fix stop beads with dabs of bonding compound rather than continuous adhesive runs, which allows minor adjustment before the plaster coat locks everything in place.
