The Catnic Thincoat Drywall Plastering Bead is a galvanised steel bead designed specifically for use with plasterboard and smooth, prepared backgrounds. It’s the kind of product that quietly does exactly what it’s supposed to: creates a true, clean corner, protects the plaster at its most vulnerable point, and allows a finish coat as thin as 3mm. If you’ve ever had a corner chip out three weeks after handover, you’ll appreciate what a well-specified drywall plastering bead actually does for the job.

This particular bead features a revised 85-degree angle alongside a new perforation pattern that gives the wings noticeably better flexibility. In practice, that means easier adjustment when the background isn’t perfectly straight, which on most sites is most of the time. Minor irregularities in the substrate can be taken out when you’re bedding onto plaster dabs, so you’re not fighting the background to get a true line. It’s a small design change that makes a real difference when you’re running a long run of bead across a wall.

Where the Catnic Thincoat Drywall Plastering Bead Gets Used

These beads are used wherever plasterboard meets a corner, edge or joint that needs protecting and finishing cleanly. Catnic manufacture these to BS EN 13658-1 from galvanised steel to BS EN 10346 DX51D+Z275, so the corrosion resistance is properly specified rather than an afterthought. Fixing is either by galvanised or stainless steel nails at no more than 600mm centres, or by plaster dabs of the same mix as your undercoat, again at 600mm maximum spacing. On metal lath backgrounds, galvanised or stainless steel tying wire to BS 443 or BS 1554 respectively can be used instead.

A Note on Background Preparation

The bead will only perform as well as the surface it’s going onto. Backgrounds need to be free of mould, grease, oil and any soluble salts in the mix, all of which can accelerate corrosion of the steel. In areas with persistent damp or heavy condensation, the galvanised version isn’t the right choice. PVCu bead should be specified for those conditions instead.

Available in 2.4m and 3.0m lengths, supplied in bulk boxes, making it straightforward to order the right quantity for larger plastering contracts.

Pro Tip: When bedding onto plaster dabs, keep your dabs consistent in size and depth so the bead sits at an even projection along its full length, a quick check with a straight edge before the dabs go off saves a lot of grief later.
