20mm rubber grommets for protecting cables, wires and hoses where they pass through metal, wood or plastic panels. A simple fix that stops edges cutting into insulation and keeps your work looking tidy.

Rubber grommets are one of those small parts that do a genuinely important job. Wherever a cable, wire, pipe or hose passes through a panel, there is an exposed edge doing its best to cause damage over time. Without a grommet, that edge will eventually wear through insulation, create an earth fault, or just look like something knocked together in a hurry. A 20mm rubber grommet sits neatly in the hole, cushions the edge, and keeps everything protected for the life of the installation.

These are the kind of fixing that electricians, auto electricians, panel builders, and fabricators go through steadily. You fit them without thinking twice, but the job looks wrong without them. They press into a drilled or punched hole and hold in place by the lip that folds over the panel face. No tools needed beyond what made the hole in the first place.

Where Rubber Grommets Are Used

In practice, these turn up in electrical enclosures, machine panels, caravans and motorhomes, automotive builds, garden equipment, and anywhere wiring passes through sheet steel or aluminium. They are a staple of any installation where cables need routing through structure. A 20mm grommet is a common size, fitting holes drilled for standard conduit entries, wire looms, or hose runs through bulkheads.

On the lighter side, they also occasionally find a second life as feet for small equipment enclosures, which is either clever recycling or a sign that someone has ordered far too many. We will say no more on the subject.

The rubber construction gives enough flexibility to push the grommet into place without splitting, while the material itself resists moderate heat and common workshop fluids. They are suited to indoor installations and sheltered environments, and where the install is permanent rather than regularly disturbed.

At this price, it makes sense to keep a stock of rubber grommets on the van or in the workshop. Running out mid-job and improvising with tape is not a look anyone wants to explain to a client.

Pro Tip: When drilling holes for a 20mm grommet, aim for a clean hole with no burrs — a sharp step drill gives a much neater seat than a standard twist bit and reduces the risk of the grommet pulling out under cable movement.
