Ziel-Plast® Plastic Spiral Dowels – 50mm (Bag of 20)
£4.35£5.22 EX VATINC VAT
Plastic spiral dowels for fixing light elements into polystyrene or mineral fibre wool insulation. Ideal for mounting cameras, lamps and building number plates. 6mm hex socket drive for fast, easy installation. Use with a 5.0 x 40mm woodscrew.
These Ziel-Plast 50mm plastic spiral dowels are designed specifically for anchoring light fittings, cameras, door numbers and similar elements into soft insulation materials such as polystyrene or mineral fibre wool. Where a standard wall plug would either pull out or simply refuse to grip, the spiral design bites into the surrounding insulation and holds. A straightforward solution to a problem that catches plenty of people out on site.
The 50mm plastic spiral dowels come with a 6mm hex socket head, which means you can drive them in with a standard hex bit and a power drill or impact driver. No specialist tools required. You just push the dowel into a pilot hole, drive it in until it’s flush, then run your woodscrew through. The spiral thread does the work of expanding into the material around it and creating a firm fixing point where there otherwise wouldn’t be one.
Where Plastic Spiral Dowels Get Used
These come into their own on jobs where you’re working through an insulated facade, a foam board panel, or a mineral wool layer and you need something to actually stay put. Think building numbering on rendered EWI systems, external camera brackets on insulated walls, lamp holders, light fittings on internal insulated partitions, that kind of thing. The clue is in the name: they’re for light elements. You’re not hanging structural loads off these. But for the jobs they’re designed for, they do exactly what’s needed.
Recommended Fixings
Ziel-Plast recommend pairing these spiral dowels with a 5.0 x 40mm woodscrew for the best result. That combination gives the right balance of thread engagement and holding depth. Stray too short on the screw and you lose grip. Go too long and you risk punching through the other side of a thinner board, which is the kind of surprise nobody needs when they’re finishing a job.
Supplied in a bag of 20, they’re sensibly packaged for a typical installation run rather than making you buy a box of a hundred when you only need a handful. Each dowel is moulded in plastic, which means no corrosion issues in damp or external environments, and the material is light enough not to add any meaningful weight loading back onto the insulation panel itself.
Pro Tip: When drilling the pilot hole, keep it slightly smaller than the dowel diameter so the spiral has something to bite into; drill too loose and the fixing will spin without gripping.
