Soudal SWS Foam is a gun-grade, single-component polyurethane expanding foam built specifically for window and door installations where airtightness actually matters. Not every foam is equal in this department, and the SWS earns its place by meeting RAL MO-01/1 and DIN 18542 airtightness standards. If you’re fitting A, A+ or A++ rated windows and doors, this is the foam that keeps the certification meaningful once the frame is in.
The acoustic rating is worth paying attention to too. At 63 dB to ISO 717-1, there’s genuine sound-dampening performance here, not just gap-filling. Combined with a thermal conductivity of 34.5 mW/mK to DIN 52612, you’re getting solid performance on both fronts from a single product. That matters on new-build and retrofit jobs where installers are expected to hit energy performance targets.
What Makes Soudal SWS Foam Different From Standard PU Foam
The SWS uses Soudal’s FLEXIFOAM technology, which means once cured, the foam remains highly flexible rather than going brittle. Window and door frames move, especially timber ones, and a foam that can’t accommodate that movement will crack and fail over time. The flexibility here improves long-term durability and makes it a better fit for joints with repetitive movement or vibration.
Application is straightforward with a standard foam gun. The foam cures rapidly, adheres without primer on most common construction materials, and works across an application temperature range of -10 to +30°C. Linear yield is rated at 21 metres per can to FEICA TM1002, which gives a reasonable idea of coverage per can on a typical reveal.
A Note on Gun Grade
This is gun-grade foam, meaning it requires a foam applicator gun. It’s not a straw-can product. For anyone doing regular window and door work, a good foam gun pays for itself quickly in yield and control.
Pro Tip: Always fully unscrew the can from the gun between uses and store the gun attached with a little foam still in the nozzle to keep it from curing solid, rather than reaching for the cleaner every time.
Soudal SWS Foam is used wherever an airtight seal is needed around window and door frames, including new-build installations, replacement window fitting, and retrofit projects. It suits masonry, timber, PVC-U, aluminium, and most common frame and reveal substrates without the need for a primer. It's a go-to for installers working on energy-efficient builds or properties where acoustic performance between rooms or from external noise is a consideration. Joints with ongoing movement, vibration, or thermal expansion benefit from its flexible cure.

Key Properties
- Airtight: RAL MO-01/1 and DIN 18542
- Acoustic rating: 63 dB (ISO 717-1)
- Thermal conductivity: 34.5 mW/mK (DIN 52612)
- FLEXIFOAM technology, highly flexible cure
- Application temp range: -10 to +30°C
- Linear yield: 21m (FEICA TM1002)
- Single-component gun-grade formula
Not suitable for: This is a gun-grade product and requires a foam applicator gun. It is not suitable for use as a straw foam directly from the can. It should not be used as a structural support or load-bearing filler.
Fit the can to a foam applicator gun and shake well before use. Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from loose material. Slightly dampening the substrate can aid adhesion and improve cure speed, particularly in dry or warm conditions.
Apply the foam in a single pass into the joint, filling no more than half to two-thirds of the cavity depth, as the foam will expand to fill the remaining space. Avoid overfilling, which wastes material and creates more trimming work. The foam cures rapidly, so excess can be trimmed cleanly with a sharp knife once fully set.
- Fit the SWS foam can to a foam applicator gun securely before use
- Shake the can thoroughly for at least 30 seconds
- Lightly dampen the surfaces around the joint with water using a spray bottle
- Apply foam into the joint, filling approximately half the cavity depth to allow for expansion
- Work steadily along the joint in a single pass to achieve consistent fill
- Leave to cure fully before trimming, following the manufacturer's cure time guidance
- Trim excess cured foam flush using a sharp knife or trimming tool
- Cover or seal cured foam with an appropriate sealant if it will be exposed to UV light
Does Soudal SWS Foam meet the airtightness standards required for A-rated window installations?
Yes. The SWS Foam is tested to RAL MO-01/1 and DIN 18542 airtightness standards, making it suitable for use with A, A+ and A++ rated windows and doors where a certified airtight perimeter seal is required.
Can this foam be used without a primer on PVC-U and aluminium window frames?
Soudal SWS Foam offers primerless adhesion on most common construction materials, including PVC-U and aluminium profiles. For substrates that are unusually smooth, dusty, or contaminated, cleaning the surface first will always improve adhesion.
What is the acoustic performance of SWS Foam compared to standard expanding foam?
The SWS Foam carries an acoustic rating of 63 dB to ISO 717-1, which is significantly better than standard general-purpose expanding foams. This makes it worthwhile on projects where reducing external noise or limiting sound transfer between rooms is part of the specification.
Soudal SWS Foam is a single-component, moisture-curing polyurethane foam formulated with FLEXIFOAM technology for a high-flexibility, low-expansion cure. It achieves a thermal conductivity of 34.5 mW/mK per DIN 52612 and an acoustic insulation rating of 63 dB per ISO 717-1. Airtightness is verified to RAL MO-01/1 and DIN 18542. Linear yield is rated at 21 metres per can to FEICA TM1002. Application temperature range is -10 to +30°C.
