Fix the wall rail vertically to the face of the existing masonry using the supplied plugs, coach screws and washers. Check plumb carefully before tightening. As you build up the new wall, slide the connectors into the rail channel at the appropriate course height and bed them into the mortar joint. Connectors can be repositioned along the rail to suit any coursing pattern.
The connector spacing should generally follow your engineer's specification or standard practice for the wall type. On standard residential extensions, connectors are typically placed every 450mm vertically, but always confirm with your structural drawings where provided.
Mark the position of the wall rail on the existing masonry face, ensuring it aligns with the intended new wall centre line
Drill fixing holes into the existing masonry at the required centres using an SDS drill and appropriate masonry bit
Insert the supplied plugs into the drilled holes
Offer the wall rail up to the face and fix using the coach screws and washers supplied, checking the rail is plumb before fully tightening
Begin laying the new wall, sliding connectors into the rail channel at the correct height to coincide with mortar bed joints
Bed each connector into the mortar course as the wall is built up, ensuring full contact between connector and mortar
Continue inserting connectors at the specified vertical centres as the wall rises
Check wall alignment regularly as you build and adjust coursing if required before the mortar sets
Can this wall starter kit be used on external walls?
Yes. The stainless steel construction makes it suitable for external use where the connection will be exposed to moisture, including cavity walls and outer leaf applications. Standard mild steel alternatives are not appropriate in these situations.
Do the connectors work with both brick and block coursing?
Yes. Because the connectors slide freely along the rail and can be positioned at any height, they work with standard brick courses, block coursing and most combinations of the two. You're not limited to fixed fixing points, which helps when the coursing of the new and existing walls doesn't line up neatly.
How many kits do I need for a typical extension?
Each kit contains two 2.4m rails, which covers one full-height wall junction up to approximately 2.4m. For a standard single-storey extension with two new wall connections to the existing building, two kits would normally be sufficient, though this depends on wall height and your structural specification.
