Stainless steel helical bars are a go-to solution for repairing cracked masonry and reinforcing bed joints in brickwork, blockwork and stonework. These 1000mm bars are manufactured from A2 grade stainless steel, which gives them solid corrosion resistance in conditions where a standard carbon steel bar would eventually let you down. Available in M6 and M8 diameters, supplied 25 per box.

The helical profile is what makes these bars work. The twisted form grips the surrounding mortar or resin as it cures, creating a mechanical bond rather than relying solely on adhesion. That means a consistent, reliable fix even in older or softer mortar beds where adhesion alone might not be enough.

Where Stainless Steel Helical Bars Are Used

Crack stitching is the most common application. Where a masonry wall has developed structural cracks, helical bars installed across the crack in consecutive bed joints tie the two sides together and redistribute load. It is a well-established repair method used by structural engineers, specialist contractors and experienced brickwork teams. The bars are also used to reinforce existing masonry when adding new loads, tying cavity wall leaves together, and restoring structural integrity in heritage or listed buildings where the original material cannot easily be replaced.

Why A2 Stainless Steel Matters

The material choice is not just a specification box to tick. In any situation where moisture is present, a non-stainless bar can corrode inside the joint and actually accelerate cracking over time. A2 stainless steel resists that process. It is also the correct choice when working with materials that are inherently corrosive, green oak being the obvious example. The tannins in green oak will attack mild steel quickly, so using anything less than stainless here is a false economy. Buildings near the coast or exposed to salt air benefit from the same logic.

At 1000mm length, these bars are long enough to bridge most standard crack stitching runs without needing to join lengths. That keeps the install straightforward and reduces weak points in the repair.

Pro Tip: When installing into soft or lime mortar, always use a two-part epoxy or specialist resin grout to bed the bars rather than relying on the existing mortar, as the helical profile needs a solid medium to grip against to achieve full mechanical bond.
