A galvanised hip iron is one of those fittings that most people walk past on a finished roof without a second thought — which is exactly how it should be. Fixed at the foot of a hip rafter, it provides a mechanical restraint for the bottom hip tile, stopping it from slipping or lifting when the mortar bed inevitably ages and softens. These are hot dipped galvanised, which gives a far thicker zinc coating than electro-galvanised alternatives and holds up properly in exposed roofing conditions over the long term.

This particular iron is 300mm in length with a 3mm thickness — a standard size that suits most traditional pitched roof details. The scrolled end sits neatly beneath the hip tile and provides the bearing surface that keeps everything in place. They’re used on clay and concrete hip tiles alike, and you’ll find them called for on new builds, refurbishments and re-roofing jobs across the country.

Where Galvanised Hip Irons Get Used

Roofers reach for hip irons whenever a pitched roof has a hipped end, which covers a huge range of domestic and commercial work. They are fixed through the fascia or into the end of the hip rafter before the hip tile is bedded, so they need to be in place and secure before the mortar goes down. Getting that sequence right is what separates a tidy hip detail from one that shifts six months after handover.

Hot dipped galvanising is the right choice here because roofing is a tough environment. Thermal movement, driving rain, and decades of exposure would make short work of a lighter finish. The coating on these holds up where a spray or plated finish simply wouldn’t last.

Sold in a box of 10, these suit a single roof job or can be kept as regular stock for roofing gangs who deal with hipped roofs regularly. At this price point, there’s no reason to be caught short on site.

Pro Tip: Bed the hip iron firmly against the rafter before fixing so it cannot pivot under load — a loose iron will let the tile rock even when the mortar looks solid.
