Coarse black drywall screws are the standard fixing for securing plasterboard to timber stud work. If you’ve ever tried to use the wrong screw for the job, you’ll know exactly why these exist. The coarse thread bites into timber hard and fast, giving you the grip you need without the board moving around while you work.
These screws have a bugle head profile, which spreads the load as the screw seats itself. That means you get a clean countersink just below the surface without blowing out the paper face of the board. Get the depth right and your skim or finish coat goes straight over with no fuss.
The Phillips No.2 recess gives a positive, reliable drive. Pair these with a drywall screwdriver or a drill with a depth-stop collar and you’ll be driving screws cleanly all day. The 25 degree point is sharp enough to pierce the board and bite into timber without pre-drilling, which keeps things moving on site.
Where Coarse Black Drywall Screws Fit In
The black phosphate coating provides a degree of corrosion resistance and helps reduce surface glare when you’re working under site lighting. More practically, it gives the screw a slightly rougher texture that helps it key into the board face before it fully seats.
These screws carry an A1 fire classification, which is worth noting for projects where the specification requires it. Not every screw on the market can say the same.
Available in a wide range of sizes from 3.5 x 25mm right through to 4.8 x 180mm, and in box quantities from 100 up to 1000, so whether you’re fitting out one room or boarding an entire floor, there’s a pack size that makes sense for the job.
Pro Tip: Set your drywall screwdriver clutch so the screw head sits just below the surface without tearing the paper face. Too shallow and it fouls your finish coat; too deep and you've lost your fix.
